I added a recoil buffer to my Springer Loaded 1911 a while back.  After about 500 rounds the buffer seems sliced up pretty good.  Now I understand it's absorbing impact so it should show wear but this is sliced up pretty good.  Normal wear or indicative of a problem?  Spring problem?

I have no experience with recoil buffers so any advice is appreciated.

I would ditch it.

It's doing what you put it in to do.

Once it gets chewed up (anywhere between 500 and 1,000 rounds) change it so it won't cause stoppages.

This. I see them as a product that was made to sell, not to buy.

Replace or Ditch, one or the other. You will probably never shoot your 1911 enough to truly receive the benefit of one. (based on poll numbers) I run them on all my 1911s and replace when they show signs of wear. I keep extras in range bag, and run them in my carry weapon as well. They are not an issue in a properly built and tuned 1911.

Replace the recoil spring as you are supposed to and they are un-needed. They really only help when the recoil spring has shortened part the recommended replacement length and does not have the needed tension that it should have. If in a shorter then 5" 1911, they can and will cause reliabilty issues and can also make your slide release very hard to manipulate.

I run them in my range pistols to reduce wear.  I replace them as they are needed.  They are cheap so if the thing is worn throw it away and use a new one.

Thanks all - it seems I'm seeing normal wear.

If your gun is chewing up a shock buff within 500 rounds, either you have some rough surfaces on the rear of the recoil spring tunnel, or your recoil spring could need replacement.
