Ok let start by saying I have had bad luck with 1911's . I wont go into the long story  . I'm trying to trade my 2nd en G21 for a 1911 . What should I try to get ? I was really "green" when I had the other 1911's and I had only owned Glocks up till then . I was unaware of the breakin period and I did not know they wouldn't feed hollow points . I am unsure as to why I think I want to own another one but , I want one . So lead my down the path of  the great 1911 . Any advice would be greatly appreciated .

here is a list of 1911's I owned .
new Springer champion .....could not hit a bucket lid at 20 yds , 4 people shot it w/ same results
new RIA fullsize . .......FTF,FTE , even with good mags .
used Para p14-45 ....... actually shoved the nose of the bullet back inot the brass cassing. Would not feed gold dots . black eye for me ...I did not know about the hollow points then

What is your price range?
If you are looking for a pistol that will drive nails Les Baer or Ed Brown is my suggestion.  If you do not want to go that high a SA TRP or Dan Wesson Valor (either are good to go), if that is to much a used TRP or Valor.  If you want to avoid a lot of those problems stay away from the lower end 1911's unless you want to do some mods and building.

To build on what Edge is saying:  we need a budget.  A use 2nd gen G21 isn't worth much, so a good 1911 might be hard to get.

These are my recommendations depending on budget:

$400-$500 = RIA Tactical
$500-$600 = Springfield Armory Mil-Spec
$600-$700 = STI Spartan
$700-$800 = Springfield Armory Loaded or Kimber Custom II
$800-$1000 = Colt anything
$1000-$1100 = Springfield Armory MC Operator or Kimber Warrior
$1300-$1600 = Springfield Armory TRP or Dan Wesson Valor
$1800 = Les Baer Thunder Ranch Special
$2200 = Ed Brown Special Forces
$2600 = Springfield Armory Professional

Thanks for elaborating but I would recommend skipping everything before the Colt and start there.

I would love to do  some mods to make it better . I'm a machinist . So if I traded for / bought a Springer G.I. and done some mods it would be gtg ?
What would be the most "important "mod. or what should I do first ? I'm really sorry about all the questions but , I really want a 1911 thay will run right .
Do you think I could get a used Springer G.I. for my G21. ? cause thats my budget  .

You could get a Springer GI for your 21..I would not see why you could not.

First upgrade-Sights. Good ones, with dovetail cuts..then lower and flair the ejection port.

Second-That's up to you..I personally would start at a new trigger, Commander hammer and Beaver tail, followed by-if you want one-a flat main Spring Housing.

Then, again if you want it, a thumb safety. Grips.

I disagree with this I would say get your feed ramp ramped and polished first, dehorn the pistol, and dovetails cut with night sights.

I have learned about the feedramp but , what is "dehorned " ?

Well I guess we all have opinions

It's a pretty well known fact that a properly maintained 1911 with good magazines, a good trigger, and some good sights is the best starting point.  If you got a GI and you wanted to do some work on it I would recommend:

Make sure everything is adjusted right (especially the extractor) and get some reliable magazines
Cut the slide and install new sights
Clean up trigger
Polish feed ramp
Apply healthy amounts of ammuntion

Once there, I'd look at:
de-horning job
Lower the ejection port
new grips from VZ
flat MSH from Ed Brown
bob the tail on the hammer
clean up surfaces like sear and hammer and trigger

There are a lot of sharp edges on a 1911, de-horning is rounding those edges, especially those that come in contact with your hand/holster/magazine.  It will require that you re-finish the gun.

I will agree with the feed ramp polished...but I would shoot it first. As for dehorn..not until I decided what I was going to do with it. Is it going to be a carry gun? Then maybe...I have carried alot of 1911's without dehorning and never noticed that they were not dehorned.

But yes..the barrel work..if needed. I would shoot it first.
