I don't know much about 1911's so I figured I'd ask the experts.
Buddy of mine is looking at buying a 3.5 inch tactical model RIA. He only has around 500 to spend and it's in his price range. As I said I don't know much about 1911's but it seems like a pretty good little pistol. Is 425 a good price and is it a good starter 1911? What say the experts? |

if for home defense government (5inch) is probably better.
While researching 1911's I heard that buying the government model was the best idea as it was more reliable than the smaller sized verisons. I don't remember exactly why but I'm certain someone more knowledgable will fill yah in on the details. |

Awhile back I almost bought a RIA to tinker with and shoot the hell out of of but when I came back the next day it was gone.
They have good fit and seem to be building a good reputation. I have no issues with owning one I understand they are not a Les Baer or Ed Brown but they sure do beat the hell out of a Taurus or Para. |
| R.I.A. is GTG and they have some of the best customer service in the business. I have a G.I. that I had to adjust the extractor tension on. It has run 100% since. The Compact is the 3.5 and also has a good rep. I would love to have one. The biggest difference with the R.I.A. compared to Springfield or Colt is the frame is cast, not forged. But don't believe they are weak. |

Really you guys? $425 for a used 3.5" RIA Tactical and you all approve?
I would say that is too much money for a used gun, and that the 3.5" barrel is NOT the way to go with a 1911. I realize that you and your friend are probably new to this, but I'd say pass. Now if it was a used 5" RIA tactical, I'd say buy it, but at $425 it better include a couple magazines. |

Shit I have seen Springer GI models for not much more, $450-$475...I would buy one of those, before I would a RIA. |

Where did you see used? I must hve missed that. All the write ups I've read on the R.I.A. compacts have been outstanding compared to Springfield, one of which I had. And again, of the short barrelled 1911's Ive had, none have given me problems. The Springfield had a shitty trigger for am $1100 pistol. Still functioned as it should. To the OP.
