A co-worker of mine is wanting to sell me his Colt Lightweight Commander 1911. So far I think it has an aluminium frame and since its a commander, its shorter right? Also, what are these things going for used (with idiot mark This will be my second Colt and first 1911 if it all works out. Thanks for your time and if this is against this forums rules, please delete. |

$600-$700 MAX if the idiot mark is anything worse than a little scratch.
Probably closer to $500-$550 would be fair if it's not in great condition. And yes, it's got a 4.25" barrel instead of the 5". It takes the same mags as the 5" though. Posted Via AR15.Com Mobile |

Can you post pics? Is it series 70 or 80? Wizzo is right Commander is a Govt with a shorter barrel. So standard Govt mags will work. It is a series 80. It is also stainless (I think, it's bare metal), I don't think the mark is that deep, is it easy to get rid of? What are the differences between the different series? No pics for now. I'd like to see pics of other's commanders though... |

You might be able to polish the scratch out if it's not too deep. Something like a Scotch-Brite pad might work if you like the brushed look.
The Series 80 consists of an internal trigger activated drop safety over the Series 70. Many see it as simple lawyer-proofing on an already safe pistol, and it's just more parts to wear, come out of time, and potentially break, in relation to the Series 70 design. Many people report that the Series 80 firing system is just as reliable as the 70 though, so I wouldn't necessarily let that hinder your choice. Besides, the Series 80 parts can be taken out......
