I recently purchased a Springfield GI, and I noticed a weird quirk... For some reason, I have a quarter? cock, a half-cock, and a full cock; never noticed this with my brother's Kimber or my older Colt S70. Upon detail stripping the pistol, I see my spur hammer indeed has an extra notch, right before the first. I don't have a camera at the moment, but imagine an additional notch on top of the Wilson stock photo, like so:

The pistol itself seems to function just fine; ran about 150-200 rounds so far. But is this anything to be concerned about? I plan on eventually dropping in a C&S or EGW trigger group in this pistol, but is this going to be dangerous to me or the gun in any way? Thanks in advance.

This is normal on a Springfield, nothing to be concerned about.

Refer to the Owner's Manual––online if you don't have one.  It clearly shows the hammer with the extra notch.  The hammer will drop from this quarter cock position if the trigger is pulled, but there's not enough energy in the hammer spring to set off the chambered round.  Have never seen in writing what the purpose of the extra hammer positionn is for, but its normal and harmless.

Thanks for asking this "silly" question. I also noticed this on mine but forgot about it until now. It should be either fully cocked or not at all anyway, so we won't be using the first 2 clicks ever. But it is nice to know it isn't an assembly issue or other problem.

So why have them if they are not suppose to be used?  Always wondered this myself.

Maybe it's just another level of "Safety"

I have an older Loaded and an older GI (12XXX) and they both have the standard 2 notches.

I bought a new Loaded in Nov 2008 and a new Champion a couple weeks ago and they both have 3 notches. Must be something they've done in the last couple years.

Thanks a lot everyone. One less thing to worry about
