Hey folks,
I'm beginning to venture down the 1911 build path and will need to have a coating done eventually (frame, slide, a few small parts to match), so I'm shopping around to find something that would work. I have stumbled onto a local company that does some pretty intense industrial coatings that look lke they fit the bill. What I need to know is what are the maximum temeratures the freame and slide see? I'm not looking to do a Todd Jarrett 1000 round dump but lets say I were to do as much as a pistol calss with a bunch of shooting. What temperatures am I looking at, maximum? |

i'm not sure. if no one can give a good answer, perhaps you can buy or borrow an infra-red thermometer and shoot the snot out of a 1911 and measure the temperature that way? I have never measured the temp. What kind of finish are you talking about putting on that you are concerned about the temp. If you are concerned about the temp I would suggest a better finish. |
| I've had a barrel so hot it would sizzle water if dropped on barrel. The slide was warm to the touch and felt no warmth on the trigger. I had the 500 rounds of ammunition but short the group of guys to load magazines for me. Finish stayed perfect on the two blued pistols and whatever finish Para uses. Have done 500 round stretches on 3 pistols. It starts to get boring after about round 499. |

It's a serious coating, not taking much of a risk, but it's from a company that doesn't usualy apply it to firearms. When we send our guns off to be coated we don't always ask what the temperature standards, we just expect it to work because it's advertised as a firearm coating...
In this case, I have the maximum temperature range for the coating of 650 degrees farenheit and want to make sure that my gun doesn't have the chance to get that hot. It would jsut be a frame and slide coating so those are the temeratures I'm concerned about. |
