So my old man and I were at Cabela's yesterday and were looking around the gun counters and I come across the Covert. He looks at me and says that my birthday is coming up and he was thinking of getting me a new G21 but he will pay for half of the Kimber if he can shoot it . I guess I'm at a stand still because I have been reading up on the Kimbers and see that they are aren't really a finished 1911 out of the box and polishing the feed ramps is needed for HP's.. I guess my question is should I get the Covert or should I look at the SA and if so which one? I want a full size and it will be my carry gun so realiability is crucial.

My Kimber SS Custom Target II has eaten every HP I have ever fed it.  My friend who is a gungho Kimber person has 4 Kimbers all used for carry of some sort all eat HP's.  I would say go for it you can never go wrong with a 1911 man.  If it does not eat HP it is probably the magazine not the pistol because Kimber does polish the feed ramp.

Thanks guys I was going off of things I got from googling Kimber Coverts and reading reviews. I guess my next question is what mags should I go with?

Um... NO.  Kimber has had basically 2 QC issues, none of which have anything to do with feeding HPs.  1911s having problems with HPs is a myth the Glock guys like to spread. If a gun has a feeding problem it most likely needs a 2-minute tweak to the extractor tension.  Polishing a feed ramp is generally unnecessary on just about any firearm.

The big QC issue was several years back when they decided to go cheap and put an external extractor on a 1911.  That was a miserable failure.  It was so bad Kimber gave up on the whole idea, and will actually change your whole slide if you were so unlucky as to have one of the EE designs.  Kimber stoped making the EE design several years ago.

A more recent issue has been that Kimber got some out of spec slide stops from their subcontractor.  That should also be fixed, but if you end up with one you can either fix it yourself, or Kimber will send you a replacement.

kimber is sooo bad that i went out and bought an ultra(the worst of the worst)! for some reason folks like to bash kimber but wont think twice about "upgrading" all the internals of every other brand with wilson. well i have yet to "upgrade" anything on my kimber except grips! and this thing has flung close to 1000rds ball and hp with 3 total fte's. that is all with the only mag that came with it! for christmas got 2 kimber tac-pros so we will see how those do. and for some reason i have yet to meet(face to face) anyone that has broken a kimber.
