does Nickel plating scratch very easy?

My stainless 1911 has small scratches on it, (my first firearm) and was thinking of refinishing it, I dont want to duracoat it, a metallic look is always a classic.

I had my stainless S.A. ,1911 A1 , hardchromed several years ago. Still looks good, with no scratches. AP&W did it in a matte silver color.

I would do the hard chrome finish before I would do the nickel plating.  I have been doing a lot of research lately on different finishes and between hard chrome and nickel the chrome will last longer and it tends to go over a little more evenly.  You may also look at Robar's NP3 finish it goes on very even and is extremely durable I think other companies do the NP3 but I just have read more about Robar so not promoting one company to another.
