I purchased an older gov't profile 1911 from my dad and it looks like the magazine catch isn't holding the magazine up high enough in place. The slide will push the cartridge downward, jamming the nose of the bullet into the feed ramp. With a bit of hitting I can get it to go into battery, and subsequent rounds seem to cycle okay, however this first round issue has me a little confused.
Originally I thought it was my old magazines. I paid $40 for a Tripp magazine and the issue is the same. I have tried with both FMJ and Gold Dots. If I press upward on the magazine while releasing the slide, it will go into battery. Upon inspection it appears the magazine catch may have a little too much play in it due to some minor marring, allowing the magazine to sit lower in the frame than it looks like it's supposed to. Oddly enough the old Mec Gar magazines (11+ years old) will not feed FMJ, but they'll feed Gold-Dots. It's the other way around for the new Tripp. I have polished my feedramp with 2000 grit sandpaper pretty considerably and that does look to help, but it's still not 100%. Is replacing the magazine release/catch something that can be done myself? I tried taking the screw out, but it was very tight, so I didn't want to risk removing it if there was something else that needed to come apart first, or if by some odd chance it was counter-threaded. |
