What are the opinions on that one?

Can the saftey be swapped out for an ambi (i.e., does a standard 1911 safety fit?)

Right now it is between the Springfield loaded and the SIG . . .

I am almost certain the Sig does not contain MIM parts, and the Springfield does.  I would pick the Sig.  I like real metal.

i hear  a lot of folks mention springer's MIM parts, has anyone ever seen or heard of one breaking?  just curious, because i haven't.

Having MIM parts alone is not a reason to buy one pistol over another.  It all has to do with what they've selected to be a MIM part (low-stress components) and how well they've fit.  Even with MIM, Springfield has a better reputation than SIG.

hmmm intersting.  well i guess that could happen with any brand, that's the first i've seen so as far as springer goes.

i'm not gonna run out and replace all the MIM parts on my springer just yet.

MIM parts seem to be ok, if done properly.

thanx for the post foxnews

My Kimber 1911 wears out slide stops.  The back side of the MIM steel slide stop wears against the aluminum frame.  Eventually enough metal is removed (from the slide stop not the frame) to cause a malfunction.  The frame shows no wear.  I'm no metallurgist, but in my experience that means the aluminum is harder than the MIM steel.  I often wonder what non-stress parts are in that gun that will fail next and make it completely useless....

MIM is what it is, and the stuff from say colt or springfield is better than the stuff kimber and para has.  Used in low stress parts, it's okay but not ideal. Personally I'd pass on the stuff, it's why my miller custom 1911 has tool steel internals.  A lot of guys who run their pistols hard at courses find out why MIM has a bad reputation - I just wouldn't want a whole lot of the stuff in a gun I'd use for home defense or CCW! You never know if that'll be the day a crucial part goes and your gun's dead right when you really need it to run the most.  The worst sound in the world is BANG BANG BANG *click*. In my opinion skimping on parts or quality is fine if a gun is a range piece, but when it comes to a life saving tool, price isn't an object to me. Being the absolute best is paramount, and many agree with that sentiment. I need my gun to  run 100%, I don't want to wonder if my two piece guiderod is going to loosen and end up down range, or if my sights are going to walk out, or a cheap extractor takes a dump and you're staring at this:

Or if a cheap mag's feedlips go and this happens:

Because if it happens during a murphy's law moment? It could be a world of hurt

THIS is why guys who run their 1911s a lot are generally insistent on things like top shelf parts, wilson, tripp, or CMC powermags, 5in 1911s,  etc.

Check out a Colt Combat Elite, if you are in the $800 range.  If you want to go to the $1000 or under, check out the STI Trojan or the Dan Wesson Pointman.  I'm assuming you are looking at a 5 inch.

well if you're looking at a 5incher, check one of these out too, run about a grand:

If external extractors don't make you cringe (obviously they don't because you're looking at Sigs) then you might want to take a look at S&W. Mine seemed put together well other than the wobbly trigger.

Otherwise i'd recommend a Dan Wesson or Springfield Loaded.

I prefer internal extractors.

I saw a S&W, it cost more and did not have night sights.

Someone at the store mentioned the SIG getting good feedback, so I decided to ask about it.

Yeah, I was considering something shorter, but decided to go with another 5". I'm in CA and can't do legal CCW anyway.

Amongst who?  My XD40 had lightstrikes and sticking magazines sent back to Springfield once.  My Loaded 1911a1 shot low POI vs POA to the tune of 7" at only 7 yards, sent it back once they replaced the sights still shot low.  Sent back again they replaced the entire firearm as the slide and frame were mismachined.  So yes they have great customer service, but I haven't had to send back any of my Sigs from day one.

Another humble suggestion to the OP, get a Colt XSE.

I have a Sig 1911 Platinum Elite, and IMHO, it shoots better than any other 1911 I've fired.  I've shot SA, Smiths, Kimbers, but the Sig is just so smooth.
