I have the desire to learn more about tuning things on 1911's. However, all my 1911's run great, or cost several thousand dollars, and I do not want to go hacking and filing and whatnot with them. I would like to learn things such as:

Tuning an extractor
Tuning an ejector
Replacing/fitting a slide-stop

and other such things. Nothing like barrel installation or anything like that, just minor things that I feel I should know about the 1911.

I would not require a nice 1911, or even one that is considered "quality". What would be a good idea of something to file on and swap parts into and learn the inner workings of? I don't want a total piece of crap that cannot be tuned due to machining that is just shit-the-bed bad, but fit/finish, etc. are not important. I would definitely buy used as the less cash spent on this, the better. What models should I look for, and what would a reasonable price be to pay for one in decent shape?

I am a hands-on learner, but I don't want to get all hands-on with my Supergrade or TRS, or my Dad's custom Colt. I am a clumsy hands-on learner at times.

Good stuff! I am not ready to buy yet, just forming ideas, but definitely along the lines of what I am after!

Either pick up a used Rock Island, or keep your eyes open for one of the older Auto Ordinance guns that someone is getting rid of... it gives you a base to work from, you can always just buy the basic parts as well and build from the ground up.  Get yourself a Caspian frame and slide and do all the work yourself.

Replace those things on your TRS with tool steel parts.

You don't have to mod the current parts, but good quality replacement parts; will not hurt to have backups for your TRP.

The Baer runs as-is,even if it is rough, and I don't think I want to mess with it. I also don't think Baer uses MIM in his pistols unless I am mistaken.

OOPS I'm a dork I was thinking the Springfield TRP.

I mis-read.  Time for me to get some sleep.  Sorry for my original reply.

Building up a nice 1911 is fulfilling experience, love hate at some times, i bought an AO Pitbull from a friend for $300 and turned it into my carry. Just remember you can't replace what you filed away.

I know how to do these things intellectually, however, in practice it is a different matter. For instance, I could get out my CC text-book and tell you how to insert a pace-maker, however, as a BSN student, I will never insert one even after I graduate, much less currently. I would like to turn my book knowledge of the 1911 into working knowledge. Most of my posts have focused on hard fact garnered from those who HAVE a working knowledge,or ballistics information (based on studies, as well as my own tests, which I describe/attribute accordingly), reguarding the 1911 and various calibers. I am curious where I detailed that I have installed/performed said operations?
