Tell us more about that top one? ~Augee |

Augee, the top one is a gun I put together years ago. At the time there was a full length rail Mil-Spec Operator, which this was, and there was a full length rail TRP operator. The Loaded full length rail had not yet come out, and there were no abbreviated rails. I thought the full length rail was a bit heavy so I trimmed it.
I cut the rail back and machined the slide for Heinies, intending to ball radius cut the slide at the front. Unfortunately, I completely screwed up the dovetail cut on the rear, and I bought a new slide. The slide is a Lone Star Arms, back when that was still around. That's how it got to be such an odd looking mix of parts. Anyway, it has a Kart barrel, everything except the frame has been replaced with new stuff. It's been refinished three times, and it currently parked. It gets shot a lot. I'm guessing it's past the 80K mark, but who knows. The only sign of wear other than the finish is that the slide to frame fit loosened up somewhere around the 60K mark when I stopped keeping track of rounds. It's still accurate. Oh, and the bore of the barrel is perfect. This is my highest round count 1911, and Larry Vickers said it right when he said it's next to impossible to shoot out a .45 barrel with regular rounds and regular care. |

liking that stainless compensated springer. you don't see compensated 1911's as much as you used to for some reason. Because using a comp for a low pressure round like a .45 doesn't accomplish much. Now if that 1911 is in .40, 10mm, etc that's another story. |

That gun shoots like a dream and its a tack driver at 50 yards. |

the whole job of bobtailing, checkering, recrown the barrel, trigger job, and refinish ran just over 400 bucks. Well worth it Looks sweet. Did you need to have the frame re-finished after the front strap checkering was done? Also, stupid question, but what does re-crown the barrel mean? I have one of these on the way and want to replace a few MIM parts (although SA does not know which are MIM), have the front strap checkered and maybe a trigger job. Also, I would like to have the frame done in the army kote as well. Anyone have any suggestions, comments, etc.? Edit to add...D-Ric, did SA do the work? |

Edit to add...D-Ric, did SA do the work? not a stupid question at all. re-crowning the barrel is simply cutting the end of the muzzle at a different angle. if you look at the business end of your barrel (after making sure it's unloaded lol) the circular edge at the front is the crown, and cutting it at certain angles lets the gases escape evenly around the bullet as it's leaving the barrel, therefore stabilizing it more and increasing the accuracy. and if you get checkering done you do have to refinish the the frame. i never thought about getting the MIM parts on my champ op replaced, never heard any probs with them. hopefully there won't be lol let us know if you have any other ?'s, nice choice on 1911's by the way |
