Lately, I have developed a very strong desire, nay, NEED for one of these things.  My intent is to eventually bobtail the frame, upgrade some parts, and carry the dickens out of it.

What do I need to know about this specific pistol?  Anything to look out for?  Is it just me, or do these things seem to command a premium?  Is there a good place to keep an eye out for a shooter/beater gun of this type?  Anything I am overlooking?

Thanks all.

First off - there are no S70 Commanders. There are only Series 80 Commanders, and pre-80 Commanders.

Second - since you want to trick it out, I say go with a current-production lightweight XSE as a base instead. Yes, it's a Series 80. Oh noes. I will take a S80 any day of the week over the other FPB systems out there for 1911s. Unless you are going to be getting down to compeition-level trigger pulls, the extra S80 parts aren't going to be a problem as far as a good trigger goes.

Third - Unless you're absolutely dead-set on having that bit of weight savings, you could just go buy a DW CBOB and be done with it.

There's a couple currently listed on gunbroker.com with listings around $1K, which repesent about a 40% premium over an all steel pre-80 Series Combat Commander. There seem to be ample quantities of 80-Series lightweight Commanders as well as quantities of all-steel Combat Commanders which can be had for about $600.  Don't know if this is a temporary phenomenah or whether the lw typically commands a premium.  I do know that those that are absolutely original command the most $$, so if you plan to mod it anyway, you'll find a better deal on one that isn't completely original.  Despite listings to the contrary, there were/are no Series 70 Commanders or Combat Commanders.  The collet barrell bushing was the signature feature of the 70's era Government Models, and the Commanders/Combat Commanders were never so-equipped.  Trivia of absolutely no consequence but I couldn't help myself.

Thanks for the info, guys.  I've edited my topic so I don't sound like such a dufus.  But that's the kind of info I'm looking for.

Appreciate the CBOB recommendation.  My heart is calling for the pony.  Not knocking the CBOB, the one I extensively played with was a finely fitted example of a Commander-esqe 1911.

I'd really like to get my hands on a well used one since I'm replacing most of the parts anyway.

The DW CBOB isn't "Commander-esque", but rather is a true 4.25" Commander platform.

And again - why not just buy a XSE LW?  It would be in much better overall condition (of course, being new) and would require less work as well (assuming that you are planning the "usual" set of mods, including things like lo-mount sights).

If you're not staunchly against the S80 system, I'm not sure why you would hold out for a vintage gun with your intended use(s).

Every XSE i've seen has forward serrations.  Not a fan of such on a commander.

I prefer not to have the S80 system, but not absolutely against it either.  It ain't that hard to convert anyway, right?

I've picked up a couple of the Colt Lightweight Commanders you're looking for here on the EE and Gunsamerica. Around the $700 mark in good condition.
I'd rather stick a red-hot fork in my eye than bob these pistols.
