A low end Springfield mi or something would be in that range. If you can spare 200 bucks or so more you will have a lot of extra choices. Better springfields, smith and wesson, colt, kimber, etc.

Maybe something used in the EE.  I picked up a really nice one for around that price.  Keep your eyes open and be patient.  You could uy a new springfield GI spec or buy something a year or a few hundred rounds old for the same price.

Yesterday at a gun show here in TN i saw a NIB Springfield Milspec for $550...  I was very tempted, but I just bought another 1911 last week.

I say Springfield Mil-Spec as well.  Great gun as is, and great gun for customization later on.

I'd say serch the EE and buy a Springfield Loaded model used. I bought one for $625 just 6 or 8 months ago.

Get a used Colt 1991/80- series for $550 to $650.  Awesome guns, great price.  I just missed this one this morning because I was in bed and got outbid.  Basically this one was $550 delivered to the buyer.  I was bidding on it just because it was cheap, not because I need another one.  Nice modern Colts are just too cheap right now for how good they are, so I pick them up when I see good deals:

This is what $550 total delivered can get you in a Colt

NM-prefix Springfield Mil-Spec.  US assembled and fitted, one piece stainless barrel, fitted stainless bushing.  Nice gun.

Springfield Mil-spec.  I have the dreaded brazilian produced one and it is a nice quality firearm.  It has the two piece barrel but it is the still very accurate.

For $650 I'd look HARD for a used Springfield Loaded.

Dude, just wait a little bit longer and save up for a nice 1911.

There is some truth to this.  It doesn't make sense to be $650 for a Springfield Mil-spec if you are going to want to significantly upgrade/customize down the road.  Wait a year, save up for a TRP (for example), if that is the type of 1911 you want.

The OP never really specified what kind of features he wanted.  We are all assuming he wants all the bells and whistles.  He might just want a no bullshit, true to the original m1911-a1.  I know that was what I wanted for my first 1911, which is why I went with the mil-spec when one crossed my path, rather than save and get a trp or what have you.  On the other hand, if the OP does want bells and whistles, he can upgrade the mil-spec with EXACTLY the features and parts that he wants rather than getting something with a pre set assortment of parts.  I had a buddy call me and tell me he had a mil-spec he was gettin rid of.  I bought it for $425 in like new condition (didnt even have any wear marks anywhere) with 3 mags, a holster and 100 rounds of ammo.  So, for that price, I HAD to jump on it.   If I had not found a decent deal on a used 1911 like that and was forced to buy new, I would save up my pennies beyond 650 and look HARD at the Dan Wesson offerings.  Great pistols, great CS from what I hear, and almost none of the parts are MIM which is a big deal in my book.

If the OP does want bells and whistles then he should add about $50-$100 to his overall budget and look at:

Springfield Loaded
STI Spartan
Kimber Custom II

Well, Midwest Hunters Outlet has Detonics pistols for $699 NIB.  Don't know if the quality on this iteration of the Detonics is any good or not though...

I've had really good luck with mine –– i bought it on a whim almost just to check them out, and for 400 bucks - its hard to lose.  Besides i needed an Officers size gun anyway

If you want to go full retro, the SF GI model is really cool, and the shootability of a full size is much better than the compacts–––– but the standard ejection port tends to spit brass out anywhere and everywhere, and the hammer can get you after a while

Dont have a pic yet, but i have a Mil Spec too,  i love the clean, retro look, but the Mil Spec gives me the lowered ejection port, more comfortable grip safety and better sights.    Interestingly enough, the RIA also has a lowered ejection port and a very comfortable grip safety as well–– but the GI style sights are small.

I like the 1911 platform a lot so far,  but i would dare say i dont like them enough to spend 2500 on a new Nighthawk right now.  Getting an entry level model and shooting it for a while is a good idea to gauge your interest in these things.     But, an entry level model that is unreliable will really sour the deal.   The 3 i named have been good , trouble free pistols for me –– and interestingly enough, the retro GI model is the most accurate.   I have , frankly, been shocked at the good performance of the RIA too, due to its pretty low street price

RIA Tactical for around 400 bucks from Sarcoinc.

STI spartan from Whittakers for around 550

Both of these have the beavertail, flgr, extended safety's, The RIA has the ambi safety.

Next guns step up in price and down in features.
Springfield Mil spec for around 600.
You loose the beavertail, flgr, and ambi safety.

You could step down in features and price with  the RIA GI, right at around 350 from sarco

You could also go used.
Some springfield loadeds run around 650-700.

How bout a used springfield loaded. Or a new mil-spec like everyone else is saying.
