Looking at picking up a Springfield 4" GI Champion Lightweight.

Don't like the sights.  How difficult would it be to swap them out for different sights?  Would it be a straight swap or would a gunsmith have to make cuts on the slide and go through a laborious process?

Also, what sights would you recommend?

Thanks

Like any other 1911 with GI type sights, there are a lot of choices in aftermarket sights that will drop in.  Your front sight is staked in.  It's a very easy process to stake in a new one as long as you know what to do.

The problem with Springfield Armory guns is that the tenon of the front sight is in between standard GI (narrow) and newer Colt (wide).  There are very few makers of staked in front sights that make them to Springfield width.

I know some people who simply take a wide tenon sight and file it down.  I machine it on a mill.  Regardless, it should be relatively cheap to go to an aftermarket sight setup.  Trijicons and Meprolights will both fit, though you might need to order the wide tenon version and have it taken down.  Also look at Novaks drop in offerings.

Thanks.

I checked out the Novack website and they even install their sights.  That would be perfect.  I can just send them the slide and they can do it all.

Letting Novak do it might be the best option, because they should be able to install the correct height front sight.  You'll need a shorter front sight than on a 5" 1911.
