I'm looking to buy my first 1911 in the next couple months and was wondering what you 1911 fanatics would suggest. I'd like to keep it under $800.00 preferably $650.00-$700.00 if possible. I haven't shot a 1911 yet but towards the end of the month I'm going to visit my dad and shoot his. He has my grandfathers old GI, not sure who makes it, so that may help with the decision. The gun is just gonna be a fun gun/nightstand gun, I don't really plan on carrying it concealed, and it won't be a duty weapon of any kind. What I know is I want a 5" barrel, Stainless, single stack, and I like the commander hammer, don't know how hard it would be to change the hammer if needed, or if its just cheaper to buy a model with it already installed. So here is what I've got my list narrowed to:

Springfield GI in stainless
Springfield Mil-Spec in stainless
Springfield Loaded in stainless/blackened stainless
Kimber Stainless II in 45ACP
Kimber Stainless II in 9mm (my only other pistol at the moment is a 9mm, so from an ammo standpoint I have been considering getting a 1911 in 9mm)

Right now I'm really leaning towards the Mil-Spec, or maybe the Loaded. Thanks, and if there's anything I left off please feel free to make some suggestions!

in that price range, expect to get the flavor but perhaps not the full refinement of the 1911.  just a heads up incase you worry about it not living up to the hype.  that said, thousands of folks buy and love 1911's in that range, so don't let that discourage you!

in that range, i know a lot of folks swear by taurus.  you can get a taurus with a lot of options, lifetime warranty (though claiming on the warranty can take some time as your pistol travels to brazil and back...), etc.
