I have a 1911 commander bobtail on order and am doing some research on holsters. I pland to buy a super tuck holster for work. [I wear polo shirts tucked in at work] Now I am wondering if you all could recommend a good gun belt and the best hip holster and shoulder holster. I am looking at a blackhawk set up so I can use the same holster for both rigs. Is there anyother options that the supertuck when it comes to deep concealment of a 4.25" 1911? Any advice is appreciated. ARnutt |

I like leather gun belts. The best one I have is an older Ernie Hill steel lined gun belt. I'd still use today, but the dam belt shrunk a few inches.
I have no need for a shoulder holster. Blade-Tech makes some nice kydex hip holster for range/comp use, just about any quality kydex holster is a good option. |

Other's tuckers are the Comp Tac Minotaur and the Blade Tech Ultimate Concealment holster. I think that the super-tuck is the superior holster. Everyone that buys one ends up loving it.
As for belts, unless you are looking for some fancy shiny belt, I'd go with the original Wilderness instructors belt. For outside the waistband Blackhawk should be fine. Look over Blade-Tech's selection too. And I have no idea what shoulder holsters are worthwhile. |

I've used a few different shoulder holsters, and my favorite is Galco's Miami Classic. This rig doesn't require tie downs to the belt and is extremely comfortable.
Can't help on the tucker holsters, as I've never tried one. I am a big fan of Comp-Tac and Bladetech though for belt and IWB holsters. |

Also, I guess I was very clear in my question. I am not really looking for a OWB holster as much as I am looking for a dropped leg holster[tactical style]. I am an athletic individual so I am currently running with a sig P239 in an Mtac IWB. Another thing that I am really looking for is a better way to carry while running. Obviously something that doesn't rub as much with all the bouncing. I have heard that the bladetech holsters don't like to stay put when running so I'm trying to steer clear of them. Thanks again for the help. ARnutt |

Just google the wilderness belt and it's everywhere. Brownells and LaRue as well as other sponsors carry them.
As for running, you're probably screwed. Most people go with a camelback with pockets to keep the gun in - or, and I can't believe I'm saying this, you can go with a fanny pack For tactical holsters, there is only one - Safariland 6004. Most don't like that dual strap system on the legs but you can modify it by shortening the strap from the belt to the rig and only using one of the leg straps. Other guys actually cut the leg shroud too, near the top portion so that it's not so bulky. Look up Safariland 6004 mod. There is a thread over at 10-8forums that covers some different ways to do the mod. |

Just got my rig from 5 Shot Leather...and I am one happy camper. Black leather with Elephant hide trim. One spare mag pouch and I am set. I won't use it yet as I have a special project this is for and once the project is over, that will either be mine or Dad's carry rig. I am sure Dad will be taking it so I have to order another. I'm thinking of sharkskin.
5 Shot Leather, strongly recommended. Bob |
| I can't speak to tuck in holsters, as I don't use them, and don't think I would. If you had to wear a tucked in shirt, no jacket, and couldn't open carry, then I'd probably carry something other than a 1911, unless it was a 3" aluminum framed gun on the ankle. A commander is going to be hard to comfortably conceal tucked in under a shirt in my opinion. I had a commander and a Milt Sparks VM2, and found that it was just as easy, and more comfortable to conceal a full size 1911 in a 55BN OWB. I don't have the holster, or the gun any more, but that brings me to my next point, and that is for OWB carry, IMHO there is no better holster than a Milt Sparks 55BN. The only drawback is that they do not offer, and will not make a holster with a retention strap, which can bother some people. BTW they make great gun belts as well, although they are a little on the thick side. |

I was thinking about some of those tight spandex shirts with the pockets on the sides and then just wearing a loose t-shirt over it. I guess I'll have to try a few different ways and see what works best. I found the belt that you described. In the midway catalog, it looked like it was just nylon web. I read somewhere that gun belts need to be stiff to hold your pants up with the weight being distributed unevenly. Is this true and will the wilderness belt work alright? Thanks again for all of your help and insight. ARnutt |

The wilderness belt is double layered and can be used for rappelling if an emergency situation dictated.
The tensil strength of the 5 stitch belt depending on width is between 7,000 and 8,000 pounds. It is definitely stiff and strong. The Wilderness Original Instructor's Belt Lab Testing Results |

I currently run a Sparks SSII on Wilderness belt that I can conceal in just shorts and a t-shirt(I'm 5'11" 195 or so). I do have a complete Sparks rig on order(VM2 with kydex clips, dual mag pouch and belt) so that I have a tuckable setup. I looked long and hard at the Tucker Texas Heritage though, because personally I don't like the thought of kydex touching the finish on my 1911. Posted Via AR15.Com Mobile |
