So I've built a couple AR15s (some in the 6.5 grendel caliber) and was wanting to build a 1911 in 9mm.   The only problem is I have no idea who makes good parts as I have only dealt with rifles until now.  I work in a weapons repair shop but we never see 1911s.  Any suggestions for manufacturers or tips?  Is building a 1911 more difficult then building an AR15?

Yes.  Parts are not standardized, drop in type.  Most will need to be fitted by hand.

Check out the stickies at the top here.  In the area of barrel fitting, minor mistakes make for major problems.

I MADE THE SAME TRANSITION.....BEEN BUILDING AR'S FOR ABOUT TWENTY YEARS AND DECIDED TO DO A 1911..........FOR SMALL PARTS, STICK WITH ED BROWN AND WILSON OR NOWLIN........A PRE-FITTED SLIDE AND FRAME FROM EITHER CASPIAN OR FUSION WILL DO THE TRICK........I SUGGEST YOU DO EVERYTHING BUT LET AN EXPERIENCED 1911 SMITH DO THE BARREL FITTING........THIS IS VERY CRITICAL AND THE PART YOU DON'T WANT TO F#*& UP ON.............I JUST FINISHED MY THIRD AND ALSO CONVERTED A SPRINGER 45 TO 9MM..........IF YOU ARE GOING TO DO A 9MM, DON'T USE ANYTHING BUT A RAMPED BARREL........BEEN THERE.......DONE THAT..........THESE PISTOLS ARE 9MM....GOOD LUCK

DUDE THIS IS THE INTERNET, YOU'RE YELLING!
Other than that, sound advice.

Putting together a 1911 is NOT as simple as slapping together an AR, not even close, tread carefully.

Also have to consider the costs.  My build is going to run close to a low end Wilson or average Les Baer pistol.  You can always use cheaper parts but I decided to do it right.  I'm building slow ordering groups of parts to spread the cost.

PS.  You'd be surprised at how fast a really tight frame to slide goes to being slightly sloppy.  Ask me how I know
