Guys,
Need some help with an issue. Bought a lightly modified Colt 1991A1 from another board member 2 weeks ago. Went to shoot it for the first time today and I'm having some ignition woes. I fired my first 7 round mag into the target, nice ragged hole. Swapped in a full mag, dropped the slide and CLICK. So I Tap, Rack, and no Bang. I empty the weapon and check the ammo, to find that I'm getting firing pin strikes, but no ignition. Put in another mag and it fired 3 times and then CLICK again. Another pin strike but no ignition. Another mag and same story 3 bangs and a click. I came home, cleaned everything and it all seems to check out. Put in a new firing pin spring went to the backyard and fired 2 rounds before getting a click. Same story. So having said all that, WHAT GIVES?????? Could it be a mainspring issue, or out of spec firing pin? Could it have anything to do with the Series 80 parts? Any help you can give me is much appreciated. Thanks, Kevin |

Take out the firing pin and inspect it, if it looks ok, you might need to replace the mainspring. No need to go full power, 19 or 20 lbs should be fine.
Inspect the tip for damage, and inspect the channel where the FPS rides. It would not surprise me if someone set it up as a target gun with a light mainspring, a handloader could get away with using primers such as Federal which are more sensitive. |

First, check to ensure that the firing pin block plunger isn't chewed up. If it is, you're going to need to tune the frame mounted levers––or delete them altogether. (Brownells and Midway have the shim––do a search for "1911 auto frame slot blank")
More than likely, especially since you're seeing fp indentations on the primer, you probably have a clipped or underweight mainspring. If it's clipped, it could just have a sharp edge dragging on the mainspring housing.....but either way, it's best to just replace it. |
