What is the purpose of the bob tail feature on a 1911?

I think the main reason is it prints less when you carry concealed.

When carrying in a holster that is canted the point at the rear, bottom of the grip is known to print under a shirt or hang up on clothing.  The Bobtail makes a nice curve that a covering garment slides right over and doesn't make a defined point to give away the fact that you're packing.

The Bob may not stick you in the ribs like a unBobbed one will. Depending on your body size.

It does two things.

1) makes the gun print less, remember, ti's the grip that is the hard part to conceal.
2) makes it so that the end of the grip doesn't poke you in the ribs.
