Con's:  They're not a Rogers Custom

I have a S&W 5" 1911, standard model, and my buddy has a Springfield milspec 5" that I have shot alot. My S&W is nice and has all the goodies like I like. But, I have to say my buddies Springer is the best value going. It seems to be just as accurate and reliable as mine, and was several hundred cheaper. I just like the beavertail, Novak sights, etc. , and it would have cost me the difference to install or have them installed on the Springer. I say you can't go wrong with either.

For the most part production 1911's are pretty much the same, parts to the fit and finish etc...   The only real difference between Smith & Wesson and Springfield is S&W is made in the United States and Springfield is made in Brazil.

both (i assume you are comparing a base SW and the SA Loaded) are top quality brands; both offer quality workmanship and great customer service and warranty

i've owned both––both have run very well

springfields had stiffer, slightly heavier triggers, but crisper vs the SWs; overall fit and finish wise, the SW held an edge; wear wise, it varied on the coating

SW has a firing pin safety, SA does not; h/w, SAs usually have the ILS lock, but those are easily replaceable; SA still uses a traditional internal extractor vs SW's external extractor––both will work well if tuned properly; the SA's frame and IIRC a few other parts are from brazil, BUT its assembled in the US; parts on both are pretty much MIM

i would consider either or, and base my decision on price

ETA: fixed typo...SW = US; SA=brazil/us

I thought it was the other way around...SA's were made in Brazil.

Typo?  Or, I  could be totally wrong.

So SA are rebadged Taurus? Like STI Trojans and RIA of the Phillipines?

No, Taurus pistols are made by Taurus.  Springfield's pistols come from Imbel.  The Springfield pistols are significantly higher quality than the Taurus pistols.

As for S&W vs. SA, I like the SA pistols more than the S&W ones, but both are probably of equivalent quality.  I think, for the price, the S&W pistols are a bit better than the Springfield loaded pistols.

My only problem with the S&W is the external extractor.

yes, my bad, its a TYPO...fixed it

Springfield Armory 1911s (at least the frames, etc) are made in brazil (by Imbel)

now, i've heard several sources state that only the main parts are made in brazil, but all assembly is done in IL; others say that the lower ends (GIs, etc) are completely made and assembled in brazil, and the loadeds go to IL for the loaded features

"Built with steel frames and slides drop-forged in Brazil and assembled in Illinois, the original pistols were pure GI, lacking firing pin safeties and utilizing solid barrel bushings."

all Pros and other top ends/customs are completely made and assembled in the US

all smith and wessons IIRC are US
