Went to the dealer today and was looking p229's, but then started handling some 1911's... First time holding one and I really liked how it felt in my hand. My dealer carries para ordanance, auto ordanance (think), and smith.

How is SW reputation with 1911's? Fair, decent, could be better, good? I can't spend more than 1000.

Second question: materials. Of course I love stainless, but is the carbon steel just as good? Believe ss will be out of my price range. I'm referring to the slide.

I have a SW 1911 and I love it.  It's never given me any problems.

Got it barely used for $625 and it is a favorite shooter among my friends and I.

Carbon Steel in in almost every respect better than Stainless.  The only advantage to stainless is better protection against corrosion.

The S&W guns seem ok, but if you are looking at spending just under $1000, the Dan Wessons are a much better value.
