I just placed an order for three railed 1911 frames and I'm hoping to start my first 1911 build soon.  I'm going to build matching pistols in 45acp and 22LR.  The extra frame is there in case I screw something up horribly or for a future build.  I already got and have watched (repeatedly) the Wilson Combat 1911 building videos.

I'm going through the brownells website and the abundance of parts is overwhelming.  I was hoping someone with a bit more experience could point me in the right direction for parts selection.

Here's what I know:  This is going to be primarily a "Fighting gun" built for classes or SHTF.  The front strap is being checkered at 20LPI to that end.  I am not a fan of arched mainspring housings so that will be flat and checkered as well.  I know I want an extended mag well, but have no idea which one.

For triggers I think a straight trigger would be best given its role and probably solid as well.  I don't like them aesthetically but pretty aint my purpose.  I have no idea what fire control group I should select.

The bevertail will be a Wilson unit.  I love the one on my CQB and see no reason to change.

I'm thinking I will use a standard guide rod and barrel w/ bushing unless there is a good reason not too.

I haven't really researched my options on sights.  I know they need to be low profile and night sights are a must.  Adjustable would be nice.

That's about as far as I have gotten.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.  Its gonna take me weeks to sort through and research all these parts and I'm sure I'll end up ordering some of them more than once as I figure out what works and what doesnt.

Thanks you

Cylinder & Slide fire control is second to none.  Also look closely at the premium parts from Brown and Wilson.

Not sure what you mean by "straight" trigger.  Flat trigger face?  I like Greider solid triggers personally, and Dane Burns used to sell a "hard use" trigger that had no overtravel screw or hole.  I like that one quite a bit, don't know if he still sells them.

I prefer the bushing barrels.  Kart and Storm Lake are good barrels and aren't awfully expensive.  Depending on what barrel you get, you may or may not get a bushing.  If you don't, EGW will make a bushing to your measurements if you don't feel like fitting an oversized one.

For sights, I think the Novak low mount dovetail gives you the most options.  There are adjustable night sights that use the Novak rear cut, I think Champion sells them.  I don't think much of Novak's adjustable low mount sights because it requires a modified slide cut.

Also I wouldn't cut the front dovetail until you have decided on exactly which front sight to use.

STICK WITH THESE GUYS AND YOU WILL BE OKAY.........WILSON..BROWN..AND NOWLIN....FOR MOST OF YOUR PARTS.........THESE WILL FILL THE TICKET.......I HAVE USED THREE FUSION FIREARMS BARRELS AND THINK THEY ARE A GREAT VALUE FOR THE MONEY........I LIKE KKM PRECISION AND I HAVE A BRILEY BARREL THAT IS AWSOME..I'M USING A STORM LAKE ON THE TOP PISTOL IN THE PICTURE....BUT HAVE NO EXPERIENCE WITH THEM AS OF YET..........

I prefer the STI grip safety.  From a gunsmith perspective.  Less work, more comfortable to shoot, doesn't require Wilson specific fitting jig.

If you must use Ambi safeties, consider popping the extra cash for SVI's machined pieces.

EGW carry bevel barrel bushing.  The ONLY one I'd use.  Angle bored.

Ed brown tactical mag catch with button.

I like the STI gunsmith blank 1911 trigger.  Composite trigger pad makes it VERY light.  Shape it to fit your needs.
