Hey guys, new to the 1911 world. I Just got my first 1911 and took it to the range the other day. 150 rounds of wwb and it rant like a champ, no malfunctions whatsoever. I was wondering what/ where to get the nessisary (spelling) spare parts in case something goes wrong. So far the only thing ive picked up is a wilson 17lb recoil spring. What else do i need?
Also what kind of mags are you guys running? Thanks. I posted this in the Colt section too, sorry for dupe. |

Well, spare parts are kinda a catch-all question, IMO. How much are you gonna shoot the gun? Occassional range use? IPSC? IDPA? 3 Gun?
If this gun will be only a range gun & nightstand gun, then there probably won't be any real necessary spare parts needed. If you're going to shoot 500-600 rds per year, then an extra firing pin & recoil spring probably wouldn't hurt matters any. Be REAL careful when you go to these web sites, as it's EASY to be the proverbial kid in the toy store.
But the better options for parts are the following: Brownells, Midway, Denny's & Dillons. Ed Brown is currently making THE best replacement parts, according to the guys who build 1911s that I respect. Much like everything else in this world, one gets what one pays for. Buying a $5 part instead of a $20 one, or a $20 part instead of a $100 one may leave one feeling a bit bitter later on, if you're not careful. Generally speaking, a recoil spring should be replaced around 2-3K rds. Everything else is normally replaced if there's an issue with it or if you wish to amend the gun to your tastes, i.e. long or short trigger, etc. With normal use & cleaning practices, most likely you'll never need to replace anything on your Colt, IMO. I try and shoot my pistols about 3 times per month. So i figure Ill soot my colt 150 to 200 rounds per month, if i dont keep in practice i get sloppy.
I paid 900 on the dot, its quickly becoming my favorite hand gun, i just put another 100 through it an hour ago... fun. |
