My main carry was a Glock 23, but I ended up picking up a Kimber Ultra CDP II for summer time carry.  It was far more low profile in tighter shirts.  Well I have grown to really like the 1911 platform and am not sure if I want to switch back the the G23 for the cold weather.  I would like to step up to a full size 1911 though.

What is a good out of the box carry piece for around $1000-$1200?  I was thinking a full size CDP II to go with my Ultra but there seems to be a lack of love for Kimbers on here.  Would I be better off with a SA or Colt?

Could go with a Colt XSE. Usually $800~$900.

Already has Novak cuts, so you can easily swap out to some night sights (factory are just 3-dot). Numerous other little bits as well.

And for that price, you can have any minor customization work done and stay within your budget. (Yes, I know you said out-of-the-box... my point is just that if there are some personal-preference parts you want swapped or the like, you have that option with the Colt while maintaining your price range.)

SA or Colt would be good to go

An SA loaded (in your price range) would offer you night sights, beavertailed grip safety - a lot of features that end up getting built into Colts by owners/custom shops anyway.

If you want a light rail, the MC Operator is worth a look, to be sure.

At the top end of your budget would be the TRP line - if what you want is within a few small parts of that, then there is no reason not to get the TRP (Operator, Lightweight, or basic formats)

I'd prefer to have a colt myself, but once priced with all the addons I was looking at, the Colt was a stagerring $700 more, most of that features already included in the Loaded models.

Colt. They have a new Combat Elite that looks good.

I like the way that TRP looks.  Are those pretty solid performers out of the box?  Reliability is my biggest concern as this will be a carry pistol.

+1.

I don't know how close you are to Springfield but I highly recommend a trip to the S&W range to rent your heart out.

I've shot their full size standard, SS, Gunsite model, and regular commander.  All have been very reliable (save one magazine that went bad mid shoot), and all were damned dirty to boot.
