What's the consensus on these?  I know people avoid the externals from the Kimbers like the plague, was just curious what you guys thought about S&W 1911's.  I'm looking at the 4.25" 1911pd and was wondering about the overall reliability of the gun.

Also, I saw 53vortec's thread right below but I think we're talking about different things.

I know that one opinion isn't exactly "consensus," but I have a buddy with a S&W 1911 Gunsite Edition, the Scandium-framed commander-size pistol, and he loves it. Hasn't had a problem with the external extractor, despite how some excoriate it as the vilest blasphemy against JMB's design.

While my S&W has repeatedly proven itself to be a POS, I will say that the external extractor system has never given me any issues (yet ).

I never had a problem with the extractor but had other QC problems.

I know 4 guys with S&W 1911s (all active IDPA and steel shooters), and they are all very happy with their pistols, with no issues in any of them.  Seems that S&W got it right with that extractor, unlike Kimber.

My SC Commander, runs great! But it throws brass at my head every once in awhile

No complaints at all from me thus far.  My Gunsite pistol runs like a top.

S&W is the only company I would trust to get an External Extractor correct.

I still don't like it because it's a proprietary part, but I'd trust it.
