I want a tight railed 1911. The MC Operator fits the bill, however, I can't stand the green finish and I would have front strap checkering added, the gun recoated and a new mainspring housing installed. (I also dislike Novak NS)

Caspian has some pretty nice options including hand fitting, integral plunger tube, railed, checkered front strap, ball cut to match the recon frame, heinie cut slide etc... from the factory.

For those who have gone either route, is it better to buy a gun and tweak it to preference, or would going from the ground up be more...rewarding if not slightly more expensive?

Sounds like what you want is a railed Professional from the SA Custom Shop.

If you can afford it, custom is always the better choice, you get EXACTLY what you want.  With a custom you don't have to sacrifice anything.  From a good 1911 smith your going to get reliablity, accuracy, good looks, and its the way you wanted it.

If you where to get the MC operator you would probably have to spend 200$ or so for checkering, another 100-200 for finish and another 100 for the MSH and parts.  Your 1000$ gun just went into the 1500$ range and in that range you could get a TRP operator.  Spend a bit more and you could get a nice custom.  Only down fall of the custom is usually the wait.

I got a complete custom build from ground up by my smith.  All said and done it was $1700, but it is exactly what I wanted.  One a side not, you can never go wrong with a SA,,

You can't stand the OD green finish? Come on. Thats what sets the gun apart from other 1911's. How could you say its ugly. I love my OD green MC Operator.

Just look at that spectacular Green!
You just can't go wrong with an Operator. In my opinion there is no better 1911 for the price.

i love my MC Operator 2250rds not an issue yet, even the color is awesome!

but for you it seems that it would be best to go all out custom, if you are gonna get an MC and get all that work done to it, you might as well just go all out and get exactly what you want in a custom gun.

Get both!

I'd say either choice you make, you come out happy/get the satisfaction of getting a well-built pistol..

Cost concerns aside, the only disadvantage with a custom made pistol is the wait.  Unless you have the parts supplier (Caspian i.e.) machine all the goodies you want (still a bit of wait time involved) and hand fit your gun yourself.

I felt the same way about the Novak sights and MSH on my older Operator.  Too long to list but let me just say I slowly replaced everything on this pistol except for the front sight, barrel, frame. slide, plunger tube and magazine release.  Everything else is tool steel.  Just my preference mind you and had nothing to do with any parts failure.  It is my beater/bedside gun.
