I have a Springfield Mil spec that may have an issue with the springfield mags that came with it. I have only had one failure to feed so far, but, the question is.

Are the magazines supposed to have alot of verticall play when locked in the mag catch? It seems that whemn I cycle dummy rounds with the mag pushed all the way in they cycle great, but when I let the mag hang low they dont cycle as well, they cycle but seem to struggle on the top of the barrel hood.

I'm not positive that dummy rds are the best test for a 1911's cycling test. As Gregory said above, live fire is the best test.

But to answer your original question, yes, there will be a small amount of vertical play in virtually any 1911. This is the tolerance built in most 1911s to ensure operation with a variety of mag mfgrs.

yes I have fired a few hundred rounds and so far only one jam, it was the last round in the mag and it seemed to jump over the extractor and the bullet nose got caught on the top of the inside of the barrel hood. I will try some more rounds and see if it repeats.
Thanks,

When you cycle dummy rounds are you riding the slide forward?

no, I am not riding the slide, I have been around handguns before you know

Just messing with you, It is a very valid question, and I am sure many people are guilty of riding the slide. I have much experience in the semi-auto hangun area, I am just new to the 1911,I am going to shoot it some more and see where that takes me, I am just waiting for my bullets to come in so I can start reloading for the .45 caliber, as much shooting as I do I would be broke very soon if I only shot factory ammo. I may have to bite the bullet and buy a few more factory rounds for the initial break in just to be sure that my reloads do not get in the way of judging the reliability of the new pistol.
Are Cobra mags as good as they say they are? And are the 8 rounders as reliable as the 7's or should I just stick with the 7?

My Cobra mags have been stellar performers. 7rd'rs if you want a flush fit mag and 8rd'rs if you don't mind the mag protruding a bit.

I run the 8 rnd'rs in my pro, they're perfect for a 1911 with a magwell.
