Hey guys, I'm trying to figure out my hours for the next few months while i'm at school- in order to do so, i need to figure out how much i need to make by november. in order to figure THAT out, i need to have a good idea what pistol i'm going to get! I really want a springfield armory pistol, either the MC operator (Which seems to have my name written allll over it!) or the TRP!

Are there big appreciable differences between the two or no?

Imo I think the best route for me, maybe buying the MC operator, ammo, and training with it- for the cost of the TRP

Note: this is my first handgun (but i have shot handguns), i'm very recoil tolerant, i won't develop flinching issues

any advice is appreciated! i learn something new every time i have a thread like this.
oh... and the kimber TLE II has caught my eye

EDIT: note my purposes do not include CCW (i live in a communist state)
its mostly a range gun,but if the shit hit the fan, or if i have a suspicious person at the door , i want it to be reliable!

i say you get the mc operator. i have one and i love it, mine has 1500rds through it. no issues, reliable and accurate and a joy to shoot even with hot jhp's. i love it. the trp has checkering front strap and the mc dosen't but the mc has the wrap around rubber checkered grips which i prefer over checkered, and not to mention that the checkering on the trp is hard on the hands. the trp has a flgr which i don't like the mc has a gi style just like i like. i think the color scheme looks better on the mc, and they both have the awesome armory kote finish. the trp also has a mag funnel but that is a $30 and about 3 minute fix from brownells. just add a wilson combat mag funnel, takes no gun smithing skills, just loosen the grip screws put the hooks of the funnel over the bushings, put the grips on and the screws in and you are good to go, that is what i did and i couldn't be happier. the trp is a great gun and all but i think you would get a fine gun for much less money.
here is mine after an extended range session.

here it is after the mag funnel was installed.

damn... it reallly might be my ticket. i got only 3 questions...

1) try it at 25 yards? (i'm just looking for a ballpark figure)
2) does it like 10 round mags?

and 3)
how much did it cost?

+1

Fox, I just bought an MC and took it to the range today as a matter of fact.  Like you I debated over a couple of other 1911s but in the end I decided on the Operator.  In short, I'm very glad I made that choice - I couldn't be happier with it.  Here's my range report on it if you care:

mine cost me about $1020 otd, and i might have gotten a better deal on it, but that was seriously the first time i had ever seen one in person, and i had been begging the gun shop owner to get me one, and finally i walked in one day when i was on rxr from deployment and he had it so i bought it. i wanted it and i wanted it then, that was cheaper than i could have gotten online so i am happy.

i have not tried it with ten rd mags other than the factory 10rds that i got with the loaded coupons, the factory 10rd mags have been garbage for me, causing all kinds of issues, and i know it was the mags and not this 1911, or the other 1911's i tried them in. the factory 7rd mags work great however, and you might want to get some of them with the coupon i have a total of 6 the only problem is that i really can't use them with the mag funnel now though.

i am working on getting to the range and doing some 25yd work for you i know you asked for it, and as soon as i get to the range again i will give it a go and let you know. though it might be a while, i can tell you that it is plenty accurate for defense i gurantee.

as long as its more accurate than a glock i'll be good with it!

CAL i checked out your thread- i seem to be leaning more toward the MC operator. heck if the MC operator costed 1200 bucks i think i'd still get it! i was planning on running tripp mags with it- so tell me how that works! i might also get Wilson ETMs for it too!

I think I paid just a tad more than DietDew did, but that was mainly due to the horribly high sales tax in my area.  I love my Tripp mag - it's definitely way above and beyond the factory mags.  Incidentally, I don't know if it's like this everywhere, but shops around here are having a hard time keeping them in stock.  I ended up pulling the trigger on it (no pun intended ) because it was the last one in stock.

that sounds like the best idea imo

FWIW: i've owned/shot all 3, i'd take the MC Op for the price and for your intended purposes

The Operators light rail is going to make it more versatile for the uses you have planed for it.

that is a good point too that i forgot if you want a light rail with the trp series you have to get it with adjustable sights, and i strongly disagree with adjustable sights on a fighting gun.

TRP

I've owned numerous 1911s over the years, and have prev owned a TRP a few years ago (which I no longer have). I bought an MC Operator 2 months ago. I like it a lot.

I also got that Wilson magwell, and as it is blue steel, I sent it off to be refinished in a matte black to match the rest of the gun. I should be getting it back any day now...

Get the MC Operator...

I too prefer the pachmeyer grips to the checkering on the TRPs...

i think it is so funny when there are 20 some people that vote on the poll but not even half of that gives a reason why. and i can't stand it when people give those one line or even worse one word answers.

I love my TRPand the adjustable sites...........feeds everythingover1k rnds wicked accurate, quick follow up shots and accurate at 25yrds and hits small steel targets at 50yrds.........OP wanted a primary range weapon so adjustable sites are a plus

wow, the TRP is winning now?

what exactly are the differences between the TRP and the MC operator?
TRP has a better fitting?

maybe this will get you by until i can go shoot those 25yd groups you requested.
here are some range reports from other forums, two of them is mine.

fox news,

went to the range today and shot groups at 25yds. it was an indoor range and i used a shitty make shfit rest i shot three groups with wolf 230gr fmj,
group sizes 2.5", 2.25 and 2.5"

hope that helps and i hope to get more for you later as well get more done for my own ifno, and with different loads, and ammo, in particular comparing wolf, to umc, to wwb etc.

I own a TRP. If I was on a budget, I wouldn't have a problem with an MC Operator. I think with the TRP you get a little better fitting and a magwell. The FLGR that came with the TRP was something that had to go.

TRPs might have made more sense when they were around the 1K mark.

Now that you can get a used Baer for the same price as a new TRP, it just isn't a good investment IMO.
