| I want to replace the FLGR with a standard guide rod. Is this a drop-in part? It seems as though everything on a 1911 must be fitted, so I'm unsure about this. |

I replaced the full length guide rod in my Custom II with Ed Brown parts from Brownells. I don't know about the smoother operation part but the bushing wrench that was required to field strip is now in the box in the attic. David |
Well, I can disassemble my FLGR'ed 1911 without a bushing wrench, but it is extremely hard on my thumb. A 1911 equipped with a standard guide rod is much easier to take apart. I saw a demonstration a few years ago where a guy was operating a 1911 with only his weak hand, clearing misfeeds and so forth. He cycled the action by pressing against a doorjamb, and the edge of a table. He pointed out that it is much easier to do with a standard guide rod. Now, I am just a recreational shooter, and go to great lengths to avoid trouble. I also live in a low-crime area, so it is extremely unlikely that I would ever need this particular skill. But since the benefits of a FLGR are the subject of much debate anyway, I figure what the heck. |
