I want to replace the FLGR with a standard guide rod. Is this a drop-in part? It seems as though everything on a 1911 must be fitted, so I'm unsure about this.

Assuming you're talking about a standard bushed barrel, the G.I. system is pure drop-in.  EdBrown.com, or Brownells has the plug and guide rod for about $25.  I'm sure there are other, probably cheaper sources out there as well.

It is a drop in part .  But why would you want to replacw a full length guide rod?  A full length guide rod makes the pistol so much smoother operating and more accurate.

I replaced the full length guide rod in my Custom II with  Ed Brown parts from Brownells.  I don't know about the smoother operation part but the bushing wrench that was required to field strip is now in the box in the attic.  David

Well, I can disassemble my FLGR'ed 1911 without a bushing wrench, but it is extremely hard on my thumb. A 1911 equipped with a standard guide rod is much easier to take apart.

I saw a demonstration a few years ago where a guy was operating a 1911 with only his weak hand, clearing misfeeds and so forth. He cycled the action by pressing against a doorjamb, and the edge of a table. He pointed out that it is much easier to do with a standard guide rod.

Now, I am just a recreational shooter, and go to great lengths to avoid trouble. I also live in a low-crime area, so it is extremely unlikely that I would ever need this particular skill. But since the benefits of a FLGR are the subject of much debate anyway, I figure what the heck.

Well, a FLGR does make a handy squib rod, as I've discovered on an occasion or two.
