so yesterday i was at the range, having a good old time shooting my springfield 1911. it's easily my favorite handgun, especially since i've done all the custom work on it.

anyway, as i was finishing off a box of ammo i noticed that one of the pieces brass flew in a completely different direction than usual. i didn't think too much of it until i went to line up the sights for the next shot. ok, front sight, where's my front sight......? what the? oh crap.

the thing i saw fly past my face was not a piece of brass, rather my front sight leaving the rest of my pistol behind. bummer. after only slightly over 10,000 rounds no less. ah well, guess i'll just have to buy a new one. good thing i've got the staking tool.

After only 10,000 rounds? Oh, Springfield, how could you disappoint us so?

All that work and you didn't even de-horn it??

nah, it's just a range gun, and i like the sharp lines. i've dehorned my others though...

Just razzin' ya'!

My staked sight is still holding up, but I'm thinking of getting it cut
for a dovetail to open up my options a bit.

yeah, i've been debating the same thing. i wish i had access to a mill right now, i'd definitely do it.

Alex Hamilton @ 10 ring precision and a host of other good smiths can fix that right up for ya.

Dove tail it and have done with it.

Psh, something went wrong after only 10k rounds? Shoulda bought a Glock!

I keed I keed!

Is this a common thing? I mean, Im sure that malfunctions of this sort arent 'common' per se, but are front sights falling off a common malfuntion for 1911s? Ive never heard of this.

well, i went ahead and ordered a new stake-on front sight for a replacement. it cost me ten bucks and i can put it on no problem.

i can't justify paying a gunsmith to do it for me, especially since i am one myself, just currently lacking some machinery.

i wish i had a mill. there's a bunch of stuff that i'd like to be doing that i can't at the moment. i'd dovetail the front sight and maybe try a few other mods on my other 1911's. this will do just fine for now though.

as far as it being a common problem, i can say that that's the only time i've ever seen it happen, though i've heard stories......
