Has anyone had any experience with scratched rifling in the barrels of their 1911's?? My buddy, his dad, and I have all discovered that something that we've shot not to long ago has scratched the rifling of our barrels. I have a Sig GSR and they both have Kimbers. The only two types of ammo that we've both shot through our pistols are Precision Cartridge Inc factory reloads and CCI Blazer Brass. They've shot quite a bit of Winchester white box from the value packs, but I don't think I have, but its possible. I noticed my scratches about a month and a half ago before I shot any PCI and they just noticed theirs recently after shooting PCI. The PCI ammo is Lead Round Nose and the Blazer Brass is FMJ. It seems based on the fact that I hadn't shot any PCI when I noticed my scratches and that the PCI is a all lead bullet that it must be the Blazer Brass thats doing it. Is the jacket on blazer a copper plated steel? If it hadn't happened to my barrel I would have thought it was from cleaning it, but I've NEVER had a problem with any other barrel and I wouldn't have guess that all three of us would have the same problem. Anyone else had this problem?? |

Are you sure it is scratched and not just dirt marks? I don't think that the blazer brass has anything that can scratch a barrel. Steel is harder than copper/brass. Where are the scratches? Chamber? Bore? End of bore? Beggining of bore? Scratches will really only impact accuracy if they are at the end of the barrel (muzzle). You might try some J&B paste if it bothers you. |

I'd bet they were already there. BB has no steel in it and a lead bullet certainly doesn't. You sure they are not lead streaks and not scratches? FWIW, most BBLs have light scratches in them from the rifling button. Just the way it is, isn't going to hurt anything. |
| The scratches definitely weren't there when I got the pistol. I'm pretty anal about cleaning my barrel, I'm not tough on it, but I definitely clean it each time and look down the barrel to check how clean it appears to be. The scratches are down on the chamber end of the rifling, so, no, it shouldn't affect the accuracy, but at the same time, its not right, and I don't want it to get worse. My barrel has it on the rifling its self, and one scratch on the lands. I'm not sure about my buddy and his dads, I've not looked at it myself yet. Its not fouling either, I hadn't shot any lead bullets at the point when I first noticed mine, and I've used several bore solvents to try to remove any possible buildup. |
I agree. I really doubt you scratched it. You're more likely to scratch you barrel from over-cleaning than by shooting. Leading can be tough to get out, especially if you're not using products specifically designed to remove leading. |
| I stand corrected.....I don't know about my buddy's and his dads pistols, but I soaked my bore with some bore solvent and cleaned well and the "scratches" are gone. It just took a more thorough than usual cleaning. I'm amazed though, it looked like damage to the rifling, there is no sign of it now and looks new. Crazy. |
