Alrighty,
So I'm thinking (more like fantasizing) of my .38 Super build.  Unfortunately, it's all imaginary at this point.  Anywho, IMO the .38 Super is a bad Mamma Jamma that combines all the coolest aspects of history/retro/sentimentality and performance, which makes me think that it should look traditional.  Now, on to the questions...

Does anyone have a new Colt .38 Super?  To all the 'smiffs here, have any of you built on one?  If so, do they seem well put together, or are they a "hot mess"?  I'd like to go the Colt route (the whole "history/retro/sentimentality" thing I mentioned above), but only if they're of good quality.

I'm thinking something along the lines of...

-Ed Brown or Wilson beavertail
-custom contoured thumb safety
-serrated (maybe checkered) front strap with MARS armament serrated MSH with
  lanyard loop
-Berryhill Custom internals and commander hammer
-Kart or Barsto barrel
-Yobo Retro rear sight and gold dot front

...you get the picture.

Now, my biggest pickle is which finish?  In a departure with "tradition" I'd like something with more "permanence" than bluing, so I'm thinking either a two-tone with hard chrome and melonite.  Has anyone done this?  Does the melonite look OK with the HC.  OR, if I go with all melonite, I'd have to get ivory grips (OH darn.).

So, what say you?

Does it have to be a Colt? Since the only thing you are really keeping is a few small parts and the frame and slide, why not get a Caspian frame and slide, and let MARS build it as their retro package?

I'd say save your money, buy a Colt in Super .38, then put your name on the waiting list at Heirloom Precision.  This is a thread on this board of one of the most beautiful guns I've ever seen.

That's one of my considerations, but I have to say that there's something about a Colt in .38 Super.

I have a builder in mind

There are plenty of older pre-Series 70 Super's on Funbroker.

Yeah, but they're pretty pricey and who knows what kind of wear they have.

New Colt's are pretty pricey, and who knows what king of manufacturing defects they have Plus, I don't care for that Rube Goldberg firing pin block system.

Well, a new Series 80 runs <$800.  The cheapest 70 series I saw on GA was $1199

If you wanted to go uber retro, you could get one of the USFA guns...
