I have been looking into completing a 80% 1911 and was wondering if there were any suggestions as to where to obtain a) a good 80% (as light as possible), b) the slide and barrel(I would like to make 2 pistols in .45 and one in 9mm), and the rest of the parts.  I found a guy who made a pretty detailed sight with links, but I seem to remember reading on some message boards that the guy he recommend getting 80%'S from got activated for Iraq.( the names escape me at the moment and I'm writing this from my work laptop).  So any suggestions would be much apprecciated.

you probably read pvt ryan's webpage/blog on it

check out www.homegunsmith.com if you want more info, they have a whole 1911 building section that you can see when you register there.

<eta> don't think you'll save any money going this route...you'll spend much more and have less/no resale value.  I did it, mostly for the fun and the experience....from now on I'll just be building off completed frames....granted I did it off of a 60% with no special tools other than a drill press (on a machine meant for wood too of all things) and a dremel tool with rotary table attachment.  It's still not done yet seeing as I need to order an advantage arms 22LR kit to finish it.
