Hi Guys,

My front strap currently has vertical serrations. What are my options for front strap treatments?

- checkering
- golfball
- chainlink
- snakeskin

Please advise. Thanks.

If your not going to do 30Lpi checkering, then just use skateboard tape.

let me rephrase - is it still possible to have the front strap checkered/snakeskined/etc?

In that case, respond to pistolwretch.

Yes, it is very possible to have the front strap textured. My main and favorite 1911 is a Colt series 70 Combat Government. It came with the serrated front strap. When I had Novak's do the work on it, they hi cut, and checkered the front strap 30lpi. So you should have no problems, with what ever treatment you decide to go with. YMMV.

This is good to know.

I've passed up more than a few nice custom 1911s that had the frontstrap serrated.

Frontstraps are usually serrated at something close to 20lpi. Notice I said 'close'.
Sometimes they are close enough to 20lpi to allow checkering at 20lpi.
Any other frontstrap texture is going to require removing or welding up the existing serrations. Some frontstraps are thick enough to remove shallow serrations. Many are not.

Jim Stroh converted the front serrations to 20 lpi checkering on this National Match.

Won't 20 LPI tear your hands up pretty bad though?

How much difference does this make in using the gun?  Does it move around a lot without the checkering?  I have not noticed this on my guns that do not have it, but that is not to say it would not be better if they had this!

I would think that depends on how sharp one leaves the diamonds.  Look at the aggressive Springfield Armory 20 LPI checkering vs the early examples online of Dan Wesson Bobtail Commanders.  Those diamonds look pretty blunt.

I have 20 lpi on my dw cbob. no problem at all.

25 or 30 lpi on my nighthawk, and it chews up my fingers. go figure.
