Finally got this 9mm together. PSA M1911 frame, all Cylinder and Slide internals, TR Enabling slide came in today. I hand checkered the front strap, cut in a Stan Chen Maxbevel MSH, blued the frame myself (came out a nice tungsten color that I really like, so haven't darkened it any more). It eats 9mm snapcaps like nobody's business. Range trip soon. Has a 3.5lb trigger pull with 0 take up.    |

Edit its 9mm, its my single stack costa carry comp Well first some back ground. 80% frame because I could not find a full rail single stack frame, I have lots of mags for ss already might as stay with it. Commander slide with a commander barrel brazed to a fixed comp I machined from bar 17-4 stainless sized to the frame. Just came out of the park tonight and put it together and scratched the slide already. I still need to ceracoat the comp due to the stainless, gonna do the slide now too. The barrel is a bull, turned down to fit in the tail of the comp. The comp has a taper to act like a cone bushing. Frame anodized olive drab by a friend. When I did the test fire when I first built it it would not eject. I had to go very light on the recoil spring because the comp weight and how much it pushes down on the barrel.Attached File |

Put this together recently. Old Para P14 45acp gunsmith kit aluminum frame and standard feed ramp. Got a Remington slide off EBay. Used mostly Ed Brown parts that needed fitting. Put a spacer in there to keep it 70 series style. Novak suppressor tall night sights. Took a fair amount of work, but it runs like a champ and is dead on accurate   |

Novak and ball cuts. -Nighthawk barrel and bushing -EGW HD slide stop and grip safety. -Can’t remember the trigger mfg offhand -Wilson bulletproof ignition parts -Wilson thumb safety (MIM) -10-8 Rear U-Notch. -Current front is a placeholder. Sort of cheated on this one, didn't machine any parts, just did the assembly. Back in the mid 70's I wanted to build a 1911, just to learn more about the platform. I found a stripped lower, and a blemished slide at J&G Rifle Ranch. They also had a 22 ACE conversion kit. Got it all put together, and set the combo to Wilson Combat and had it all hard-chromed to match. Turned out reasonably well, and a fun project. It's been a long time but I finally finished my 1911. I got the caspian frame at least 10 years ago, then the slide and added parts to the collection. Slide was a no sight cut with only rear cocking serrations. I machined the novak sight cuts and forward cocking serrations. I did the golf ball style (checkering???) on front strap and mainspring housing. I eventually bought the grips because they kind of match.  I can't remember who I bought the internal frame parts from. The barrel is a 1985 surplus 1911 one I picked up years ago and had laying around. I threw it in and it actually shoots pretty good even though it's ugly. I keep thinking about a nice match barrel but not sure if I will go that route. All sharp edges were removed then I parkerized it and then decided to cerakote it FDE because dark guns suck here in the summer. I finished fitting the threaded barrel so I can add some shhhhh to it.       |

I build a 1911 and a rifle for each of our kids when they're born. Here's one, started off as a RIA GI Frame that I got from Sarco back when they were only $119 ea. I used an SA jig to cut the GI tangs and then added spot welds and then reshaped them to accommodate the beavertail. I'm currently in the process of standardizing the lot of them, so I'll take more pics and post them once I get a free weekend to cerakote. The one below I'm keeping as FDE. Then I'm going to do one in foliage green and the other in sniper grey. I always use the hogue piranha grips, extremely grippy but more comfortable than VZ. Attached File |

  Cheely frames and grips. Caspian slides. Bar-Sto one piece barrel and compensator for the government. Fusion Firearms ultra match for the commander. Mostly EGW internals, with C&S ultra match hammer. Red Dirt triggers for both. The commander will have a red dot on the slide. The government will eventually have a red dot on a frame mounted optic mount. I'm hoping to get them completely done by July. |

Today I'm going to attempt to turn a regular mill file into a 25lpi checkering file.  (Brown style beavertail jig, barrel holder, barrel alignment gage, and a hood length gage.) Lessons learned: It's not easy to make it perfect, but it isn't impossible either. I haven't fitted the barrel, but I think that it can be done by a non-gunsmith. That being said, I am a machinist. You will not, I repeat, will not save any money doing this (at least not the first time.) I'm in it for the experience only. However, now that I have a C&R license, parts are a lot cheaper from Brownells and MidwayUSA, so I highly suggest that you get one. It'll pay for itself the first time you make an order. I took my SS Costa-ish 1911 out today when shooting with the wifey. I had her shoot a slow mo video of a mag thru it, the port really throws the gas up and keeps it flat. One thing I did not know when I posted this before, the gun is tight, like shoot 100-150 rounds thru it and it needs oil. It's tight like an old school built 1911, no wiggle in the slide to frame or barrel to slide fit all, probably too tight. But here is the video.  diy ported 1911 |

This was about a year in the making. I went through several iterations before settling into a blank commander slide and an 80% frame using a grip from here in the EE. The frame came in full length and I cut it down as well as the gov length barrel so I had to cut down the bushing too. The entire thing needed a good bit of hand fitting.

It shoots reliable and smooth, the firing pin is striking dead center of the primers and it is tight so not sure anything can be done aside from a new barrel. I did another one for our 4th kid...I used a full Nighthawk Custom parts kit in 9mm. This was by far the most labor intensive 1911 build I've done (#10); probably because Nighthawk takes pride in custom fitment. I Cerakoted the frame Coyote and the slide FDE. It runs beautifully with the Rugged Obsidian. I just need to install a new pin kit because I forgot I left some old ones in the frame. Attached File |
