What happenned to them over the years?  I see some occasionally for sale but I would  guess that most of them are war bring backs.

It wouldn't surprise me if our gov't didn't chop them up or melt them down.  It would be an awful shame for such history to go to waste.

Thats exactly what happens. All military weapons deemed "non-usable" are destroyed.

There are plenty being given nice homes by thoughtful Americans.

They USED to cost $12.00 plus $5.50 shipping and handling from the DCM [now CMP]. Original paperwork is cool to find.

These were old antiquated surplus junk, costing $300 for as long as I can remember. I always had an appreciation for them and picked one up instead of the "sexy, modern" 92s and Glocks Leathal Weapon and Die Hard showcased, yup... for $300. Then sometime in the late 1990s interest/appreciation started to pickup and they began to skyrocket. The resurgance in interest thanks to the WWII classics made in the 2000s didn't help the buyer much.
