New to the 1911 here. Just wondering if this is ok? Any other no nos with this gun?

Buy some snap caps.

The concern is eliminated.

Dryfiring the vast majority of modern centerfire pistols is not a concern.  The same cannot be said for rimfire weapons, as dryfiring those can damage the chamber and firing pin.

That said, go ahead and get some snap caps just like the dude above suggested.  I recommend the A-Zoom brand, they're made of metal and feel  like real ammo.  Don't worry, you won't mistake these A-Zoom snap caps for real ammo...they have a dark reddish/maroon coating.

Everyone who walked into the shop dry fired your gun before you bought it.

I've dry fired 1911's for years.
Had one problem back in the 70's with a soft ( defective ) firing pin.
The pin began to expand at the plate, increasing the diameter to the point it was sticking in the hole.

I dry fire mine all the time with no problems.

On the 1911 dry firing is ok and will not hurt the gun.  Dropping the slide on an empty chamber is bad on the fire control parts and should not be done.

As above - don't make a habit of dropping the slide on an empty chamber.

After thousands of dry firing reps, you may eventually wear out your firing pin, spring, or stop, but that doesn't stop me from dry-firing my 1911s.

What parts will be affected by dropping the slide? Wouldnt this be similar to dropping the slide with a loaded mag?

No, the extractor will act as a small tuning fork & vibrate. Dropping a slide on a loaded mag allows the case rim to absorb the kinetic energy & vibrations.
