Is the Thompson 1911a1 a good gun? The prices on them seem to be a lot lower than other 1911's. I don't know if that is because it is not as good of quality or because of something else. All info and opinions are appreciated.

Oh! ok, what are some good brands for a good price? I really like Kimber but they seem to be kinda pricey.

What price range is the Thompson, and what model?  I have a Thompson Custom model that I got for less than a Springfield mil-spec.  I bought it because the price was right and it was also less than a Taurus.  It was also not my first 1911.

Even though it was Thompson's flagship model, it did have some evidence of less than perfect machining such as a couple of places that were sharper than they should have been and the factory supplied magazine doesnn't work so well, but it runs like a top with Wilson combat 47D mags.  Wilson mags actually cost less than the Thompsons factory magazines so that ain't so bad.

Mine was priced low enough to be very little risk, but I wouldn't pay the $500 price tag of the "standard" or "WWII" models because the springfield mil-spec is the same price and comes with MUCH better reputation and service.  Most of the time with 1911s your going to have to spend at least $800 for a good production 1911 with the nessasary features and quality that you're going to want.

If I could get another just like for what I paid, I would, but otherwise I'd be inclined to spend my money on a gun with less percieved risk.

It was a Auto Ordance/Thompson 1911A1 Automatic Delux .45 acp and it was around $419. I just need a "cheaper" fun gun 1911. Its going to be a gift for my dad. Just something fun for him to take to the range and shoot. Will this work?

I would recommend a SA GI or Milspec.  My experience with AO Thompson is poor, and the only 1911s of theirs I know of had several problems, including the sights falling off.

I owned a Auto Ordnance-Thompson 1911A1 in the 1990's, quality was not very good. I sold it and purchased a Springfield Mil-Spec 1911A1 and have been very happy with it, I would run from a Auto-Ordnance pistol.
