It can not be that hard. I am trying to remove my rear sight on a series II Kimber to neuter the schwartz and i cannot loosen the detent screw that goes through the sight to hold it in place.

Does anyone know if kimber uses some kind of Lock Tite on this part?

I have used two wrenches for this job and they both have twisted to the point of breakage.

Why is it so hard to remove the damn thing?

please help

Use a hair dryer to heat up the rear sight, heat loosens thread lockers.

A soldering iron on the screw head works also.
A regular hair dyer may not be hot enough, but a heat gun or soldering iron will do the trick.

Thanks for checking back in,

I got the screw out however i can not get the sight to drift off.  I am going from right to left with a 7mm drift punch and it doesnt seem like it is budging.  Anyone have any ideas as to what is wrong?/ what i am doing wrong?

You are doing nothing wrong. Kimber just installs them very tight. I changed the sights on mine to Trijicons.  We used a vise, and some strips of clean oak from the Home Despot.
Drove it out with a brass punch and ball-peen hammer.

Kind of had to wail on it a bit. Ok, more than a bit.

Right to left sounds correct. You wan to drive it so that the rear slide goes towards the ejection port (starboard side of the gun)

Don't try it without a vise.

I used a piece of leather between the vise jaws and my slide.

Goo-luck... keep us posted

...... if memory serves me facing the slide from the rear the sight comes out from left to right.

A friend told me last night that Kimber uses a 100 ton press to put thier rears in so i will be ordering the tool to drift them out.

thanks for the help all

I just put on a Champion rear sight last week.  I found I could only get the sight out by driving it towards the ejection port side or from the left side to the right.  I didn't have much trouble, but I used a square piece of scrap hard wood to drive it out.  The small (7mm) punches did not provide as much surface area.  The hard wood pushes the whole side of the sight and won't scratch anything.  Good luck.  David

yeah, but if you really wail on it you can force it out right to left. Trust me on this.

When I did mine I was told, drift it out the port side.  I thought they meant "port" as in ships, i.e. the left, not ejection port, i.e. right.

I use two blocks of wood in a vice.  I also use block of wood and hammer to knock/drift sight out without marring anything up. If they are loc-tited, heat is a must.

You can try to freeze the slide and sight. When the metal shrinks due to freezing the aluminum sight will shrink more and is much easier to remove.

Take it to a professional gunsmith.  I damaged my Colt trying to remove that dove tail SOB without the proper training or tools.

I think it's a 20 ton press but they are a bitch to get out.  I gave up after six or seven hard blows with hammer and brass dowel.  I have no idea why they have a set screw.

A vice is a must have tool when trying to knock dove-tail sights in

I would send it to Kimber, rather than take a chance on scratching the hell out of something. Thats what I did.

I have a feeling Kimber wouldn't take the Swartz parts out for him.
