So, I'd been having problems with one of my Wilson 47D magazines, so I took it apart to clean and inspect it. I normally do this about every other time I clean my pistol. I noticed that the feed lips were no longer parallel. Towards the rear of the feed lips, the lips are slightly spread apart. There are no cracks or anything, just slightly spread feed lips. This caused two stovepipes in my pistol. Last round, both times, with S&B 230 grain ball. But it wasn't the average stovepipe, because the case mouth was all mangled and bent up. And I can't get the magazine to stovepipe with other brands of ammo. I just shot S&B, Federal, and Speer, but only the S&B did it. Wilson has a warranty on magazines, right? |

www.wilsoncombat.com/a_magazines.asp Our dimensional tolerances are held so close that you will never encounter a Wilson mag that doesn't drop free from your pistol or that your rounds are tight inside the tube as long as your pistol and ammo are close to proper specifications. No risk service policy (if it breaks, we replace it!) Send it in........ |

Wilson has these new mags... Tactical Elites, which were designed with two things in mind... being a "true" 8-rounder (instead of our traditional 7-rounders massaged to fit that 8th in it), and having feedlips that will never need replacement, even with years of unreasonable use. The 47 series mags are among the best magazines out there, but they are subject to the same feed lip issues every other mag is susceptible to... over insertion etc. As a few have outlined above... PART of what you spend all that $$$ on at wilson is service. You buy a CMC magazine for 15 bucks and run it through IDPA for 5 years. It craps out and you buy another for 18 bucks. Five years later you buy a third for 20 (all adjusted for price hikes). Buy one wilson for $32 and they will replace it that first time, and then that second time. So, which really is the overpriced buy after all? |
Pulpsmack, do you really think the Tactical Elite magazines are that much better? I'm thinkin' about getting a few. |

I spoke to the CSR there at Wilson when they came out to see what the hype was. I was informed that the bodies of the TEs are designed for extra strength at the feedlips. The reality of all 1911 mags is they will wear out at the feedlips (including 47 series). The premise of the TEs is that you won't have this problem with them. Either way, Wilson makes good on both. |
