I'm excited! Bought a new (Taurus) 1911 at the gun show this weekend ($480). It's my first 1911 and my first single-action-only pistol. I've handled 1911's before, but don't know the significance of the 'half-cock' position of the hammer. What am I missing? Sorry if this is a stupid question. Just trying to learn.

Thanks,

Grats, Half cock is there for when you are slowly letting down the hammer, so if you slip, it wont completely drop, it will go to half cock. But I dont recommend using it. Never ease the hammer down on a chambered round, and in all honesty, never ease the hammer down period. Just make sure the chamber is empty and dry fire it.

I was going to scold you for not posting pics, but since it's a Taurus, I think it's for the best that you didn't.

Can't post pics. I'm at work right now. Besides; I'm a sensitive guy, and you've hurt my feelings.

The only thing I see on it that is questionable is on the right grip, where they cut out for the ambi-safety.....not a very neat job. Looks like a rodent gnawed it out. But I'd like to get some wood grips anyway. Other than that, fit and finish seem very good. But what the hell do I know? I like my Ruger P95 too.

The catch is that half cock won't catch the hammer if your finger is on the trigger. Half cock is basically a safety so that if the hammer/sear fails the half cock will not allow the hammer to hit the firing pin.

Ignore the half-cock notch.

It will never be used during proper manipulation of the gun.
