What company has the most durable, corrosion resistant finish straight from the factory? Which would you recommend?

Nighthawk's diamond black finish.

I'd say any company using an IonBond or Melonite finish.

If you decide to get the finish aftermarket I have Black-T on 3
1911's and its GREAT!  I think its done by Walter Birdsong.
He is VERY busy as he does govt work as well.

does anyone hard chrome from the factory?

I was wondering about stainless vs say Nitron (SIG) or Kimber finishes as well. Any opinions there? What's the most durable and corrosion resistant?

Nighthawks Diamond Black is the best stuff I have seen. Very tough and resistant to scratches. Nighthawk does hard chrome as well. Kimber's KimPro finish is about the worst I have seen. Wears very easily.

Colt does but only in the Special Combat Government line.

I found this to be the case also.  Although I do not have experience with Nighthawks Diamond Black, I believe it is the same, or very similar to IonBond DLC or Melonite which I know are extremely tough and good looking.

I also found as well that the Kimber KimPro finish is not great.  Like stated above, it wears very easily.  It doesn't seem to be even as tough as even something like Springfield's Armory Coat, which is another pretty basic finish, which I do like.

STI will hard chrome most of their line for you. They did my Edge and I am very happy with it. It is three years old with thousands of rounds through it and it looks brand new.

Ionbond DLC coatings are not the same as Melonite. Melonite is a superior finish. Melonite all by itself does not actually color the metal black (boron carbide saturation), it changes the surface of the metal so a secondary process is used to complete the actual surface finish for color.

I used the Ionbond DLC coating because it was economical and matched a SIG I already had, however, if I were doing an entire gun from the white I would opt for Melonite. While the DLC is a tough finish the Melonite is simply in another league.
