Can you get a 1911 in 9mm? Would it be any good?

Yes you can. Kimber, Springfield, and others make them. Alot of competion pistol shooters shoot them.

I picked one up a couple weeks back.  Photos and observations are here.

1911s are built in a variety of calibers: .22lr, 9mm, .38 Super, .40, 10mm, .357 SIG, and several more esoteric chamberings.  Depending on the caliber they can be challenging to get running correctly.

They aren't awfully popular because of the single-stack design.  People figure "If I'm going to carry a single stack, it might as well be in .45. "

The first pistol (and first 1911) I ever shot was my Dad's MkIV/S70 Government 9mm.

He still has it and it's still a great gun!

STI also makes a single stack.  I'm a huge Springfield fan, and have considered buying one of their 9mm's in the past, but after looking at and shooting the STI, if I do buy a 9mm it will be the STI.

Since you're mentioning STI . . . I'd love to have two of them, both the EDGE model:  one in 9mm and one in 10mm.

I bought a used one in .40 and had it reamed out to 10mm.  It was an awesome pistol.  I got out of shooting IPSC and sold it, what a dumb move that was.

I keep looking at a wideboy 9mm just for fun, but I'm really having trouble justifying it.  I figure if I get the railed version I could call it a "house" gun, I just don't think my wife would go for it.

Recently, at one of our IDPA-style matches, I had the chance to shoot another guy's STI in 9mm.

It's an understatement to say it was SWEET.

Put all nine rounds in head box of the target at 10 yards about as fast as I could pull the trigger.

Was very impressed with the STI.

I think it's covered in my catchall weasel words above.
