Has this question been beaten to death?  Sorry, if it has, but I am looking to purchase a 1911.  I have always owned Glocks and am now wanting to get a 1911.

I like them all and am familiar with, "You get what you pay for".  Is the Taurus a decent 1911 or just flashy marketing?  Please don't bash me for asking I've noticed that the Taurus doesn't seem to get talked about hear much.

What's a good 1911 for $6-800 bucks? Smith, Springfield?

Thanks

yea, try a search, there are a LOT of topics on the PT1911

just a few:

for ~$500, i'd say they are worth it; mine has been very reliable (a couple ammo related problems w/ reloads), but has been a great 1911 for the price imo

h/w, its nothing to compare to a nice sprinfield, kimber, or colt; finish, machining, and parts are not as nice as the rest imo

for $600-$800, i'd say you are better off looking for a springfield, kimber, colt, SW, or dan wesson...

I shot one at the gun range I belong to.  for the money I think its an awsome entry level 1911. The guy that owned this one said he bought it over the
Springfield WWII because of the sights, I have to Agree. I own a
springfield WWII that I converted to 9mm by adding a Essex enhanced slide with Novak sights.  The taurus is well made and a bargain for the Money.
Great shooter as well.

I have been very happy with mine, as well as a second one I bought for my son. They cost less than $450 each. Great in both cases for entry level 1911's. They now sell locally for close to $150 more, and I would probably shop around some at that price.

Yup, no longer a "deal".  A good used SA or Kimber is a much better weapon.  Every Taurus I've read about that's had a couple thousand rounds through them have crapped out.  I've shot one and handled a few in the shop and they aren't total crap but nothing I want.  Not a hater, just a realist.  You get what you pay for.  There is a reason that the SA GI and the Taurus are similar in price yet the Taurus has all the bells and whistles.

Clint Smith just tested one for American Handgunner. Did pretty darn good except for the extractor breaking. Article should hit the newsstands soon (I'm a subscriber).

Pretty darn good?

Clint reported that the point of aim/point of impact changed by 6" within the first 1500 rounds!

He states "Something seated or a bit of magic ocurred, I guess".

A 1911 barrel typically averages .045" of barrel lock up. A 6" change at 25 yds indicates that the barrel changed position by .035"!!! I don't think that is a good sign......

I've really enjoyed mine.

I own Several Springfields & other 1911s.

The Taurus has held up ( and held point of impact too!) through a L-O-T of shooting.

Do you Tauras owners also buy shellfish that is a week beyond the expiration date?
Do you tell folks how good it was?

That is not even a close comparison. I have put thousands and thousands of rounds through mine without any issues. Finish sucks, but everything else about the pistol is up to par.

I will take my experience with my PT1911 over what some gun rag says, or people that haven't owned/shot one extensively.

Naw........since I aspire to own/carry one of your creations one day like my friends EO and TB, I figure I better defer to you on the subject of suitable 1911s .

I've only handled the Taurus 1911, never fired one.  But there was one last weekend at my local gun shop for $770 before tax, and that's way too high in my opinion.  And this one didn't have Crimson Trace laser grips.

The prices on them keep climbing for a reason, people want them. I got lucky and got mine when they were first available. I think I paid about $550 for mine out the door with a OWB holster, two extra mags and 100 rounds of ammo.

Clearly the definition of "par" varies between individuals.

I've seen about a dozen of them come through the store, and am not terribly impressed with them. They are as loose as the Thompson 1911A1 and the frontstrap checkering looks like it was done by a monkey. I am no SA fan but the mil-spec is a much better choice. Or the Kimber custom II for a little more money. Oh and we have sent several back for repair.

Can I ask which store you work in?  What have the been the problems with the pistols that have gone back for repair?  Has Taurus been good about repairing them?

Sportsmans Warehouse. IIRC the problems have been FTF. Taurus does stand behind their warranty but they have the slowest warranty service I have dealt with at work.

I won't own one because I prefer the high dollar 1911s so I can walk confidently with my nose in the air.

I had one and it was awesome. There was no play in the frame to slide fit. It was tighter than the asshole of a monkey getting electrocuted. It was accurate and fed with no problem. I traded to a good friend who really wanted a 1911. I lost a little in the trade, but I was hooking up my friend.

Every pistol maker has their lemons. Hell, my current 1911 is a SS Colt XSE. I bought it NIB and the first time shooting it, the ambi safety became loose; loose enough for me to wiggle it out! Does that mean that mean Colt sucks? No. I was just one of the few who got a gun with a bad part. Thats what warranties are for.

The PT1911 is a lot of pistol for a low price. Yes, the price has gone up since it first came out; I bet its not because they are a POS!

Not to try and ruin anybody's profit margin but I believe dealer cost on these is still pretty good.  If retail shops are getting a higher price you can be assured it's all due to high consumer demand.

Yes, confidently knowing I paid maybe $50 more for a gun that is made with superior materials, workmanship, has a better finish etc.

I've said it before and I'll say it again:

I have heard too many reports from owners to not believe that it shoots good. That being said, the price has gone high enough now that you can get a slightly used Kimber/Colt/Springfield for the same price and have a higher quality gun with a forged frame and LESS mim parts.

The problems with the Taurus that makes it worth no more than about $400-$450 IMO are:
1. bad finish- fresh from the factory it looks rough
2. gritty trigger- maybe it smooths out
3. gaps under the rear sights- okay for a $400 gun but not for a $550-$600 gun
4. front strap looks and feels strange- it seems blocky and departs from a normal 1911
5. checkering- looks horrible, I'd rather have NO checkering honestly that the checkering on the Taurus that looks like a 7 year old did it with a hacksaw.
6. I have heard more than one report now from smiths or trainers saying they have had numerous problems including broken ejector, extractor, POA off, soft internal parts and a couple other things.

I don't doubt that it shoots good, but unless they improve the fit and finish and the small details, they have priced them too high to compete with that level of gun that is superior in those regards.

These are my observation from holding a couple Taurus guns. Go ahead and flame on, I know the Taurus guys are pretty defensive about their guns. I'd rather get a barebones Springfield GI for less and wait to have the mods done down the road the right way.

I find it funny that when somebody points out known issues with the PT1911 we are called "snobs" when the guns we prefer are only marginally more expensive (or less, I paid less for my Kimber than what many pt1911s are going for now).
Oh well, I call those that can't see the faults with their chosen gear "kool-aid drinkers" so I guess we're even....
