Got a relatively new 1911 that I want to smooth out.  My Beretta 92 was greatly improved by polishing the trigger and sear.  Can a 1911 be easily smothed out with some 1000gt sandpaper and some patience?

Make sure that you have a full understanding of the relationship of the sear and hammer
before you start anything.
Changing the angles leads to major problems.

YMMV

1911 sear engagement surfaces are not something I would mess with.  Much easier to do wrong than right.  Possible consequence of getting it wrong is death or grievous bodily harm.  Pay a gunsmith.

I read what you did with your Beretta 92. Good job.

As for a 1911, Wilson hammer and sear jigs should be used to polish and correct angles. Otherwise just polishing the face of the sear, not the engagement surface, might help. Other areas to ensure are burr free would be the front and rear of the disconnector (where it engages with the trigger shoe, sear and spring), and the entire trigger shoe.

I wouldn't recommend the sandpaper. Invest in some Arkansas stones and Flitz.

What everyone has said above.  Read, read, read and understand before you start hacking away.
You might want to use this

to get done quicker.

Just kidding.

Don't let the "nattering nabobs of negativity" piss in your Cheerios ! Get some 100 grit sandpaper, a Dremel and a hacksaw and have at it !
