I have been trying to make my way through the selction process to buy my first 1911 pistol. It will be my first carry pistol as well. I can't afford a custom made piece, but want all the quality I can buy up to $1000-1100. I also have one other "must", it has be made in the USA. Does that limit me to Colt, Kimber, who else? Any suggestions I should be looking at? I need help, I've been all over the board on this one!!?hanks, Steve |

I think $1,000 just might get you into the door with a RRA. They would be considered King of the production pistols, or the ass end of the semi-customs... they offer a clean pistol that's a top performer, but it lacks the art of the Browns and Wilsons. If you want better than Colt, but can't get past the $1,200 mark(and the semi customs area good leap past $1,200) RRA would probably be the best buy for your money. ETA: Did a quick search and found they're a little more than they used to be... $1,400-$1600. Frankly I couldn't justify spending $1500 on a RRA when you're that close to a CQB from Wilson Combat. If you can find a RRA for around that price I'd say jump on it. Your other option is to buy a Colt Series 70 Repro, or Springfield and enjoy that while you recover your funds. Save your pennies, and send it to Yost for the 1* package. Now you have a top rated semi custom that you bought on the installment plan, and you didn't have to do without a gun for years to achieve this. Plus you becoming familiar with a Stock Colt/SA will give you a true respect for the workmanship of Yobo when you feel the difference once it comes back to you. |
Go to a gun show and wheel and deal. Nothing wrong with kimber,or Springfeilds,or SW. Dont feel the need to get a semi custom right out the door. IMHO I think most are a little overrated, and definatley overpriced. I regularly outshoot my friends with Wilson and nighthawks, with a Kimber series1 pro carry. Never underestimate practice. I'll take a high end production over the "designer" guns any day. The best SA are made in US. such as TRP Operators and such. I've seen many fine 1911's in your budget and you wont wait months to get them. Good luck and enjoy, cuz after your 1st 1911 you will need more

| Buy 2 used Colt's in good condition, you should be right around the 1200.00 mark, then follow the previous posters advice with a twist. Shoot one to become proficient with the 1911 design while the other one is sitting in a smith's shop being done up. Last time I called YoBo it was six months and they need to hold on to the gun. C&S has a similar wait, although they don't hold the gun, they tell you when they're ready for it per your place in line. For 1911 carry I reccommend Milt Sparks holsters and belts, I haven't bought another brand of holster since my first one from them. |
Well thanks guys! That's exactly what I did, just bought my first 1911. A second generation Colt Gov't. Series 70. Talked with the guys at YoBo's and I'll be going down to see them in a few months, after my new baby and I get to know each other!hakns |
Good luck and enjoy, cuz after your 1st 1911 you will need more
