I am getting ready to purchase a colt combat commander XSE. I noticed that they also make it in a lightwieght commander. I plan on using this gun as a carry piece, but i also plan on shooting an IDPA match with it every now and then. THis means about once every month or two. i shoot about 3 matches a month but i have several other gun that i shoot too. Which commander would best fit my needs, the light weight or the regular commander? Thanks |
| I own a Combat Commander (which is what they called the steel-framed Commander back in the day), and I carry a steel-framed compact. I am sure the weight savings are enjoyable, but they are not necessary in the least. I prefer to have a more durable gun that lasts longer, and the fact you are using this in matches seems even more compelling. I would go with the Steel frame. |

Not contradictory. He says he shoots 3 matches a month, one of which is an IDPA match he would like to use the commander for. An alloy frame should easily go 30,000 rounds. The 8-10 oz difference makes it carry a lot better, but does not really add to perceived recoil since most of the weight is still out at the muzzle. |

I carry a fullsize 5" 1911 everyday, and have so for the last two years. I've finally decided to go with a LW Commander because I'm finding myself not wanting to carry anymore due to the heft and size. I feel 8 oz does make a huge difference over several hours of carry. I carry strictly IWB with a Belt Man belt and a Alessi PCH, so I'm using a top quality carry set up. I'm not too worried about frame life. Even if I only get 15,000 rounds out of it, that is a ton of shooting. I have enough 1911's that my LW won't have to worry about getting worn out. |
