New to 1911s and I recently bought an RIA Tactical and it has been funtionally flawless and very accurate (I'm hooked, like I am on AR-15s). I now want to get a higher end stainless steel 1911 and have narrowed it down to Kimber, Springfield and Dan Wesson (my budget is $1,000 or so) can't afford a Wilson, RRA or Brown. I really like the Kimber's but am somewhat leery of the external extractor and Swartz firing pin block. My local dealer stocks SAs and Kimbers but would have to order a Dan Wesson. I want a loaded 5" with three dot or night sights. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks |

I had a kimber with the external extractor. It was a disaster, Kimber sent me two different design extractors never admitting there was a problem. Never got it running well. Sold that POS Bought a Dan Wessom PT-CBOB it has been flawless. It also has an external extractor but it actually works. I'll never own another Kimber after the fiasco I went through very poor CS |

I would not buy a Kimber with a external extractor. Get one with a internal and you will have an awesome pistol ready for CCW. Loaded stainless 5" with three dot night sites: www.kimberamerica.com/pistols/custom/stainlesstlerl.php Without the tactical rail: www.kimberamerica.com/pistols/custom/stainlesstle.php |

Have a couple Kimbers and a DW CBOB. As stated above, stay away from the Kimber external extractor. Kimber stopped making them due to the constant problems. My DW is a great gun. The only issue was that the chamber was so tight it wouldn't go completely into battery with some hollowpoints. had my 'smith ream it out a tad, now it'll feed anything. SA makes a good gun as well, but the Kimber (and DW for that matter) have a better fit and finish in my opinion. |
My plan is to use mine until the night sights start to fade then tell them I'd like my new slide now and see if they send me all new stuff. |

I agree, I would stay away from the Kimbers. That is more of a personal opinion though. They sell 1000's of them every year, and most work for the users. I just don't care for them. Springfield is a great gun. Especially the loaded version. Or better yet, shop around for a slightly used TRP. You can get one of those for around 1000 or less. Great bang for your buck in 1911's today. I own a TRP and wouldn't sell it for just about any price. The most accurate 1911 I own. And it has never failed me. The DW is a very good choice too. From what research I have done, the DW is an outstanding value. Granted this is all from internet stories. I haven't personally handled one yet. I plan on picking up a DW CBOB in the very near future to see for myself. No mim parts, 3.5# trigger, and very tight fitting tolerances. Everyone says they have outstanding accuracy. Good luck on your search... |
