I just bought a new Colt 1911 (01991) blued.  I am looking to pick up more mags.  I believe the USGI contract mags are decent (I am finding them on the net NIW from 80's).  The other mags I see are stamped "Colt 45 Auto" no horse logo as in here on gunbroker, claimed to be US contract mags of various makers:

http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=72138610

Are either the USGI contract mags or the Colt 45 Auto stamped mags any good?  I want to buy plenty but don't want plenty of junk.  These seem priced decently (I know you get what you pay for).  Or should I just stick to Colt factory mags (higher priced)?

FYI - There are TONS of FAKE "GI Contract" mags for sale.

Everybody seems to have a favorite 1911 mag.

If you stick with major makers like Wilson , Metalform, or Mecgar -you
should be ok.

I've used just about every variation of the "GI-type" 7-round flush-fit metal mags.  I've had some new contract mags (supposedly) that were horrid.  They jammed a lot and very quickly the baesplate welds came undone and spilled their guts while shooting.  I've had similar problems with Mec-Gars and Metalforms.

The ONLY 7-round mags I trust are the OLD GI contract mags - I've got a few and they're ugly but they work real well and the NEW Colt mags with the rounded front on the follower, the dimple in the middle of the follower, and the staggered leg.  Those are really well made and really reliable.  I use those as my main carry mag with Wilsons or Tripp Cobra mags as backups.

I have found that Metalform(from 3 years ago)mags work very well in my 1911 Springfield. I was going to buy alot more but then I heard somewhere that they were being made by a different company or something to that effect. Oh,wait,Springfield Armory used to sell Metalforms as extra mags but THEY went with another company. I was going  to use the Springfield discount coupon to purchase more mags but when I called, they weren't going to guarrantee that I would get Metalform mags as they went with another company to supply them.

I think the Metalform mags are the best on the market because they are cheap(relatively),and work flawlessly in my 1911.

I have been using Metalform 7 rd'ers, some with the round top follower, and some with the traditional flat follower, as well as Colt factory 7 rd'ers and they all have run great.

All I use is Wilson 47Ds, CMC PowerMags, and the SAI factory 7 rounders. I've had zero malfunctions.

I had a stainless "gun show special" magazine that said "45 COLT SS 7 ROUND" on the bottom that was a jammomatic. At least two out of every 7 rounds fired was a FTFeed. I also found this 15 round magazine for my 1911. It would jam every shot, unless you held onto the magazine very tightly while firing.

Yeah, I've purchased some "Colt" mags on-line and through gun shows... they had the Pony, but they weren't Colts .  And they disentegrated while shooting (welds broke).

The REAL Colt mags are some of the best.  And I'm not saying that cause I drink Koolaid... it's my experience from shooting.

Wilson mags R the best i've used so far.  I got the 1* package done on my Springfield 1911 WWII Mil-Spec by Ted Yost and (3) Novak mags came with it.  So far no failures of ANY type with these, I just like the lower profile of the Wilson for carry.

Fred Thompson is the Man!!  We need a str8 talker no BS kind of guy in the Whit House!!

Wilson 47D's have run them for years, no problems.
I also like the ACT-MAG's.
Had no issues and they're $10-$12 bucks cheaper than Wilsons.
YMMV

Had the same problem with the Colt mags I got from colt supplied with my pistol.

There's no excuse for that.

I've had bad mags from everyone so far except Colt.  I even had a bad Wilson.  But for me, what I trust is Colt 7-rounders and Wilson mags.  I'm also warming up to the Tripp mags and think that they are fine mags as well.  I've had no luck with the CMC mags nor with Mec-Gar or Metalform mags.  The CMC mags just wouldn't run reliably and the Mec-Gar and Metalform didn't stand up to use for long.

I shoot mainly 1911s and have a ton of mags and a ton of rounds down range and this has been my experience so far.  Your mileage may vary .

I gave the 15 rounder away with strict instructions as range mag only.

But I "fixed" the stainless magazine. I shot it 7 times and then stomped it into the ground. Now it'll never cause a malfunction for anyone ever again.
